Follow up: Our mazda5 now has about 2000 miles on it. It has done the hesitation at least 6 times now. Three times from a dead stop and 3 other occasions while accelerating from about 15mph in 2nd gear. Our car has been at the dealer for two days and they are not able to duplicate the problem. They say they've checked it with the computer twice, but nothing comes up. I believe the service manager is doing everything he can. He has talked with "Mazda techs" but they say they've not seen this problem anywhere else. He has no solution and thinks it was probably temporary since he can't duplicate. I guess I'll be watching my car closely and be very weary of pulling out in traffic.
If anyone else is having this issue please take it to your dealer and report the problem so at least Mazda is aware of the problem. From what the service mngr told me Mazda hasn't seen this issue anywhere.

I just got my mazada 5 and a few people outside of the vehicule noticed when I started the car that it as a weird rattling sound like a metal rattling. I called my dealer today and got the "its a normal mazda 5 noise" and mentioned something about starter or something along the line of noise close to the starter I couls not ear him well as I was on the cell phone when I called him. did anybody experience the same noise or know of this noise. It seems to be near the front passenger side.

If it's a buzzing sound (rather than a rattling sound), then we have it, too. But it goes away within about 5 seconds.

Actually, I have a Ford Freestyle and it makes a rattle too for a few seconds. I think it's one of the heat shields...not a big deal.
