Hi~ Forgive my ignorance; but what is "Smart" and "Stella"?I'm still in the beginning thinking stage. I would love a Subaru for safety but it seems as you have all said that there is no in between. There is the Outback and Legacy and then all the way up to the Tribeca. I would love something similar to a RAV 4 but in Subaru tradition.
Thanks

Smart and Stella are both very small, efficient "city" cars. Forester's a small SUV, and RAV4 has grown out of that class into mid-size, I feel. Tribeca is the closest to RAV4, I think. Tribeca's longer by about 10" and is about 2.5" wider. (For comparison, a Ford van like you had is about the same amount larger again than the Subaru, 10" longer & 2.5" wider.) Comparably equipped, Tribeca & RAV4 are within a couple thousand of each other. RAV4's starting price is much lower, however. Start adding options & the price quickly goes up into Tribeca territory. Both are great vehicles, so it's really a no-lose situation for you.

I strongly considered used 06 Tribecas like yours, loaded as well, and found plenty of them at Bill Kolb Subaru. One like yours listed for $24,848 at a dealership. Retail.

Also, I can use Subaru Bucks at a dealer, and had $1100 worth of those. So my final price would have been $23.7k.

The dealer that offered you $23k was being fair, trust me.

You lose 10% the second you drive off the lot, and another 10% per year thereafter. Figure yours depreciated 30% by now.

If you paid $35k you should expect $24,500 with a private party sale, and that's a good residual.

Ateixeira's numbers sound right on the mark.

We see this in the RWTIV thread all the time.

People expect a high trade-in offer but dealers have to make a profit somehow. The common reponse is, "if the car is so great, why are you selling it?"

Think about it, we haggle to below invoice and they have to dip in to their holdback even. There's no way they make a profit on new car sales.

Plus, we are essentially buying new cars at cost (wholesale). We shouldn't expect them to give us retail for our trade. That's suicidal.

Apples to apples. I think this would be different, say, at a Saturn dealer, where you pay MSRP. They have a lot more room to give you more for your trade. Maybe if you're buying an Outlook, the dealer has a $2-3000 profit margin to play with, and can give you maybe $26k for your 'Beca.

Just a thought.

I just placed a deposit with my local dealer, Southern States Subaru in Raleigh NC, for a 2008 7 passenger Limited in Deep Bronze. They are doing a dealer transfer from a dealer who is ~120 miles away. I'll be picking up the vehicle on Friday. MSRP of $35,305, selling price $32,300 and out the door for $33,710 including tax, tag and doc fee.

I did the entire deal via email/phone and used the pricing from www.fitzmall.com as a reference for negotiating. I used this same method back in 2001 when I bought my '02 Outback LLBean from them. It was painless, and providing a concrete reference to show what price I can get via a short train ride and drive home really provides a great negotiating point.

The Tribeca is going to be a 40th birthday present for my wife. It will be the vehicle that finally allows me to gain possession of my Outback. I drove the Outback for about a week before she declared it as her own, and relegated me to the Honda Odyssey.

Congratulations. To me that sounds like a good deal, right on invoice. I'd like to know what others are getting for 08s. The remaining 07s around my area seem to have bottomed out at the up.per 28s which makes your deal seem even better

Back to pricing,

Anyone getting invoice, above or below on this truck? I was quoted MSRP for Nav Limited. My salesman said he could do better, and I'm pretty sure I can too. Here's the deal that was quoted. BTW, this dealer has just 1 Tribeca in stock.

36 mos/15 miles
37,544 MSRP (Limited Nav. with convenience grp 1/protection grp. 2)
37,544 Selling price
money factor...00165
residual...21,775.52 (58%)
530./month

Fitzmall.com have these for a little under invoice, ie a lot under MSRP. I see no reason why dealers can't match. I am in the same boat and plan to use fitzmall as my benchmark as others have done with success.

I won't lease unless I can get invoice or better on the Tribeca. 3 months from now we'll be quoted invoice and 1-2K under will be the good deal. 530/mo. (without tax) is just too much for this vehicle. I tried to get lease numbers on the Hyundai Veracruz and this is what I got;

money factor...00301 (8%+)
residual...49% on 15K miles/year

Totally not worth leasing, and not worth buying if resale is consistent with the other Hyundai's. End of discussion, end of interest.Acura MDX mf is .00255, residual of 49% (15K miles). I'd be better leasing an Audi Q7 at .00019 MF. and service is INCLUDED.
