Carsdirect.com purchase in Southern California? by jay57

I'll be buying a 7 passenger B9 any week now, with every bell, whistle, doodad, and geegaw available, and would like to hear from anyone in Southern California who has purchased their B9 through Carsdirect.com.

My prior buying experience through Carsdirect.com was excellent (2001 VW Passat), but was wondering if that will still be the case.

The two dealers I've been to in the Valley & Ventura both (salespeople) said they've never heard of Carsdirect.com (yeah, right), but when we returned from the test drive, on both occassions, the salesperson went to the fleet manager, who very quickly came to us and stated they can beat any deal we can find on the internet, give us a chance to earn your business, etc.

Carsdirect.com is so painless, but if I can get a better deal with a little work, I'm willing to do so.

We drove 65 miles each way to get our Passat, so schleping to a dealer an hour or two away to get a better deal is no big deal for us.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Though I'm not (yet) a B9 owner, and not in SoCal, I'd suggest using carsdirect as a bargaining tool (which you're already doing), but purchasing from a local dealer if they earn your respect and offer you benefits over purchasing online (i.e. good service department, complimentary loaner cars, etc.). It's nice to develop a relationship with a dealer whose service department you can trust, so I'd ask around the Subaru forums for recommendations in that regard.

Also, you may be able to bargain extra benefits during your purchase negotiations with a dealership, such as buying accessories at invoice, a couple free oil changes, or whatever. And by buying at the dealer, you're helping your local economy.

But hey, if there's no dealership that treats you well, go with the 'net!

Invoice pricing by drohrer

FWIW I've been offered the Tribeca at "invoice price" by the internet manager of our most local Subaru Dealership. (Don Jacobs in Waukesha, WI -- yeah, I remember the oil cap incident, I'm hoping it was a one time deal.) She offered to order one for me at that price. (6-8 weeks lead time) I'm not sure I want to wait that long. There seem to be no 7-pass base mahogany red pearl B9 Tribecas within 500 miles of Wisconsin on a dealer's lot that she can get. Maybe my wife will settle for Atlantic Blue Pearl...

She also said they were getting a shipment of "wind damaged" vehicles from Indiana that they would sell below invoice. But the damage "couldn't be seen". Hmmm, wasn't there a tornado or hailstorm out there this summer??

I know they're out there some place, but my wife won't do leather seats. (Her car so I guess I shouldn't complain. Plus it saves me a $1K or so!)

We're going out to test drive one this morning in the rain.

I just keep looking and hoping.

Wind Damage? Or hidden flood damage? by ateixeira

Steer clear. After Katrina, who knows how many Subarus were flood damaged and have a salvage title. No matter how small the chances, it's just not worth the risk. Be safe and buy elsewhere.

Wow. I hadn't even thought of that. How would you know? This is a vehicle with 16 miles on it. (I saw it today, took it for a ride.)

Is there any way to be sure? I was at the dealership and it did have a "used" car disclosure sticker in the window even though it only had 16 mi on the odometer. How would we know about any vehicle for that matter? I think Car fax will only give you the info on a car that has been previously titled ( maybe even only privately titled), but these dealers can trade them without titling them.

At what point is it safe to buy a "new" car again?

New is fine.

My concern with that one is that they were disclosing that the vehicle had prior damage. It may or may not be a salvage title, so check. My insurance company will not sell Collision coverage for a salvaged vehicle, not at any price, for instance.

I don't think all the info from Katrina cars has been put together yet, so I'd shy away from any "damaged" cars for now. In fact, forever.
