Replying to: x5killer (Sep 08, 2005 11:35 am) I posted this message of how much I paid for my B9- in another post... This is the 7th car I have negotiated for myself and family- so to say that I was prepared is to say the least. Instead of looking over what you should have done, lets look at how we can help the next person get a better deal. I got my prices with Consumer Reports Magazine at the local Borders Book Store. I took the book with me to the dealer and pretty much said this is what invoice price for this car is- this is how much invoice price for DVD and Navigation are- these are the only things I want in my car- all other features that the vehicle on your lot have is useless to me- and I don't want to pay for those options. I share with my salesperson that I understand that they are out to make a profit, and I am here to get the best deal- I also let them know that Subaru of America does give a "hold back" to dealers even if the car is sold below invoice so the dealer and he will still get paid. So we do the whole haggling thing- I offer 34K out the door- even though my invoice price clearly shows that as too low. After much haggling their best price was 37500- that's when you decide to use your strongest tool, WALK OUT. The next morning, I visited the next dealership (luckily two dealers in my area) and do the whole process again. At the end of that ordeal, the best price I am quoted is invoice- Again, I walk out, while driving away I call the first dealer and explain to my sales person, that I liked working with him better (I really did) and I wanted to give him a second chance- this is what Folger Subaru has offered, I don't want to play around, if you can beat him or even match him I'll be there in fifteen, if not, I thank you for your time. I purchased the car that afternoon- 4.9% for 60mo's- zero down, the only other thing that was added to the invoice was extended warranty, subaru's own Gold Plan ($100 deductable after factory bumber to bumber is over) for $650 ( this too was overpriced originally by the finance guy- I told him competitors have service plans for much less, and if he can't get it around the $500 dollars I don't want it- was originally 1200) Before you know it, you too can get the best deal for your next car... The important thing is never show that you like this car too much- and approach it simply as a business proposition, you can at any moment get up and walk out- you are not obligated to feel bad about the dealer or salesperson, afterall, only you will be making those monthly payments.

The guy who bought that New Beetle on E-bay for $25 grand? He overpaid. Same for the guy who wanted the first PT Cruiser and was crazy enough to fork out $25 grand. Hope that makes you feel better. -juice |

It's helpful for us who are still soaking up all the info before stepping out to buy our B9's. I plan on using a similar approach. Like a wiseman one once said: "patience grasshopper". Congrats on your purchase, and welcome aboard. |

Replying to: ateixeira (Sep 08, 2005 12:25 pm) just please dont say do your research before because I did, they just wouldn't budge and my only action wold have been to screw them over piss them off and walk out on the deal after all the trouble and getting the vehicle to their dealership which is a whole other story in which I was the one who made that happen when at first the other dealership would not cooperate. Oh and as far as better service or consideration in any way after i went along with the deal that i expressed to them was way more then i shold be paying etc etc. that hasn't happened. In fact they were mostly only nice and helpful before the deal. once they got it they have not been helpful or nice at all, they in fact suckered more money out of for options by giving me the 2 cheapest options free so when i was there to get them installed they knew i would just want to add the other options i wanted at the same time and had to pay full price for them and barely got them to give me like 15% off or something on those. They have not offered any consideration or complimentary service and in fact after having promised to install the portable xm sat radio pre order gift stiffed me on that with that inaccurate and 100% wrong reason that it is not meant to be insalled in the car when it in fact has instructions pictures to do so and others have received it installed at other Subaru dealerships free of charge as part of their pre order gift. They have not treated me like someone who just bought their most expensive vehicle in its most expensive trim with every possible option and paid over 2,000+ over invoice and thats where the real problem is. They should be treating me like a vip customer and they are instead treating me like crap which is very bad business on their part and they lost any future business on service or other vehicles.

I've made friends with my salesman and that's more important to me than saving $100. He lets me go out on test drives by myself, no questions asked. He trusts me and that relationship has paid off. That matters more to me vs. squeezing the last few bucks out of a deal. -juice |

So you paid more because they had the color and options you wanted and you were not willing to walk away. no offense but you paid a premium because you wanted what they had and they probably knew that. its supply and demand. at the time you signed for the car then you knew how much over invoice you were paying and wanted the B9. like posted earlier, you get the better deals when you are willing to walk away. pissing off the dealer (so what) they are in car business and once you get emotions involved you more then likely will pay more. yeah they got the vehicle there but not at the price you wanted to pay. then walk away. you chose not to walk away and paid more to get the vehicle that was in front of you. around here there was ONE dealer that wanted MSRP. I walked and after 3 dealers found one to give me a good trade value and invoice on the B9. but I did have to walk after 3 hrs of negotiating then when they called back I got $800 off the price and $1000 when it was all said and done. I didnt feel bad, they made me feel that way when I walked but heck its my money. and they did call me back the next day to renegotiate

We shopped the internet, negotiated a good deal on a 5ltd due to arrive at the dealer beginning of Sept. The day after Labor Day the dealer told us it was due in "any day" and was in Boston (3 hours away). Not willing to take the trade in amount they offered, we dropped the price on our old car in half and sold it within 24 hours. Suddenly the car hasn't been shipped, is still in IN, and the dealer tells me today that Subaru is holding up production of the 5ltd but they should resume "any day now." I've let the dealer know I'm p!ssed off and they've offered us a loaner to tide us over. I also know we could have gotten more for the old car but I tell myself we got what I was willing to settle for as trade-in and in the meantime we've made a college kid's day. So my questions: 1) Anyone heard anything about this hold up in production? 2) I feel like the dealer owes me more than just a loaner. There's always the option of taking a hike to another dealer but the thought of starting over fills me with dread. Do I push for free floor mats or something more? |

Replying to: harvpt (Sep 13, 2005 3:47 pm) if you absolutely must have something by a certain time, always make sure any contract specifies it. if they outright lied to you in some way and purposefully deceived you then you may have some recourse but try proving that one!

Replying to: cptplt (Sep 13, 2005 7:22 pm) You're right, we should have gotten something in writing from them. And as I wrote, we've made a college kid really happy with a great deal on our old car. But what about the hold up in production of the 5 LTD? Any news on this? |
