I tried it. However, when I reconnected the negative there were no flashing lights or beeping. The battery had a slight difficulty starting but it did. I was very pleased to see the blinking cruise and the check engine lights disappear and that the cruise control worked fine all day that day. The following day however (yesterday) the blinking cruise and the check engine lights came back on. Any guesses on this? Do I need a new battery?

Do you have any friends that own an ODB2 scanner? I have an Actron that cost me less than $100.

Those can read and clear the codes, so we know more.

We had exactly the same problem. Disconnected and reconnected the battery and filled the tank with premium fuel and made sure that the fuel cap clicked twice, as suggested in threads on-line and by Subaru. After about a week or so the light would always come back on. We finally took it into a mechanic who ran the CEL code and discovered that we had a really dirty spark plug. Has been running great the last 3 weeks.

Good idea.

A while back I recall that Kate used a bottle of HEET to remove water contamination from the fuel lines, and that helped. Maybe he just got a bum tank of gas.

Well, I found out that Autozone scans codes for free. Their scanner generated three reports which, in sum, they are:
Report 1) the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 (which I guess is cylinder 1) is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. As one of the probable causes, the report says that it could be a defective catalytic converter.
Reports 2) and 3) are the same: that a misfire has occurred in cylinders #3 and #4, for which a probable cause is faulty spark plugs.

I plan to replace all four spark plugs and hope that this will do it. Is there anything else that you think I should be doing? Many thanks for all your help with this.

Sounds familiar, I had a misfire that turned out to be a hungry chipmunk chewing up my spark plug wires!

Try the plugs first. Next in line would be the wires. Lastly, the ignition coil. Don't worry, the coil is just $80 and there is only one, plus it's very, very easy to replace.

That should fix it, let's hope.

No, you should see a grid of lines (mine are dark orange IIRC) right around the wiper blades' resting spot.

My guess is the original windshield broke and they replaced it with a cheap one, instead of one with the heater element.

If you bought it from a dealer I would take it back and complain.
