| I bought my 08 HCH on Dec 30th. I have logged the gas ever since. At first we were getting 43-44 mpg. We do mostly rural & mountain driving in our 54 mile commute to work. As the weather warmed, the car broke in, we added air to the tires (36lbs.), and we adjusted the way we drive for the hybrid, our mileage has increased. We're now close to 13,000 miles and the last 2 tanks we got 53.6 and 51.8 mpg. A few weeks ago we took a trip to Las Vegas and got 48 mpg going and 46 coming back(against a headwind). City driving does reduce mileage. For our type of driving the Civic has been a great car. For strickly city driving a Prius might be better since it runs more on electric at lower speeds. We looked at a Prius but my 6' 4" did not fit well into the Prius. The Civic is a pretty comfortable car. We're very pleased with the Civic. | |

Not a 10 MPG difference, but its possible that it'd make a notable dent if you replaced them with conventional tires. 2.) Ethanol. Where I live, in Birmingham, Alabama, Ethanol didn't start showing up until last winter. Now, you can't find a pump in town without the "Contains up to 10% Ethanol" sticker on it. It's hurt my mileage in a noticeable way; easily 2 mpg. 3.) Have you checked spark plugs? If you've got enough miles on the car that you had already replaced the tires 9 months ago, I'd assume you are at least over 50k miles. The spark plugs may be worth a look, and something to consider changing. Just a thought. 4.) Have you accumulated junk in your car? It won't make a HUGE difference, but cleaning out some stuff will do nothing but help your gas mileage.

Replying to: nedzel (Jun 23, 2008 4:40 am) Do you (you being plural, not just nedzel) honestly think Honda would put out false info and possibly ruin their reputation in the car community as one of the best companies for fuel efficiency in North America? I don't think Honda would take that chance; too much rides on that reputation.
