The $30,995 (MSRP) 325i comes standard with stability control and moonroof - two highly desired options in the near-luxury segment. The Volvo with these options costs $30,200 (MSRP). $800 more for a dynamic, perfectly balanced, RWD, I-6 powered sport sedan? I guess mankind will have to tolerate a little bit more ground level ozone wherever I'm driving...

BMW isn't exactly dumping toxic sludge on bunnies: http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/nav/index.html?http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/0_0_www_bmwgroup_com/5_- verantwortung/5_2_verantwortung/5_2_4_umwelt.shtml You might also check "spheres of responsibility" at the top of the page. I think both companies are strong on safety and the environment. Buy what you like, knowing you are making a good choice. dave |

Replying to: fedlawman (Jul 26, 2005 6:22 pm) When I configure a 325i (can't get the AWD in the '06 yet, correct?) I get $35,520 without the premium package but including cold weather package and sport package. This seems pretty comparable to the s40 configuration I bought.

Replying to: mdid (Jul 27, 2005 12:06 pm) IMHO, the only BMW that is a good "value" is a 325i with no options. Personally, I can live without xenons, leather (BMW vinyl is very good), heated seats, and all that other stuff (heck, my current pride and joy doesn't even have remote locks, power seats, or airbags - but it does have an I-6, RWD, and Limited Slip Diff!) As for AWD, I again feel (IMHO) that it's a waste of money no matter where you live. Even on solid ice, it doesn't help you turn or stop - it only helps you get moving forward a little easier - certainly not worth the added cost, weight, and potential maintenance. I'm all about the drive, not the frills. I would gladly live without some luxury fluff to get the best driving car in the class. And since even the base 325i comes standard with moonroof, traction & stability control, and basically power everything, I think nothing else compares for around $30,000. Of course, you really have to drive one to really know why. BTW - "dumping toxic sludge on bunnies"...hilarious! Maybe a future Olympic event? |

Replying to: fedlawman (Jul 27, 2005 8:05 pm) That's one reason it's too bad volvo dropped the select package on the t5. I like their gore-tex a lot. For me, leather's a step down i have to pay for in this case. I second the new olympic event. The good ole USA could use any help we can get in the medal count. dave

Replying to: dhanley (Jul 28, 2005 7:56 am) BTW, I was driving behind a T5 today on my way home from work and immediately noted one clear advantage the Volvo has over the BMW - it looks HOT in red!

I took my V70 in for it's 22,500 mile service this morning and had a few hours hours to wander the dealership. I re-looked at the S40 and drove a T5. I still feel the same about it - Light, tinny feeling and sounding doors, cheap plastics inside, and contrived interior styling (though the seats are comfy!). Engine feels strong, but it's not eager to rev (like a Honda or BMW). Throttle response also felt sluggish (something I've noticed on every Volvo I've driven), steering is numb, and the shifter is vague. It's a very capable car, but it just doesn't beg to be driven just for the fun of it. I think the 2006 BMW 325i puts every sport sedan under about $32,000 to shame.
