That would be great.... but, I doubt it will happen..

Audi made that mistake with the A4 convertible.. Only available as FWD.. at first..

That could be a feature that really sets it apart.. AWD on a convertible... A true all-year-round car for any climate...

I hope you are right... and.. that the tooth fairy leaves me $40K..

I expect that volvo will introduce it as AWD.

I attended bmw's ultimate drive event here in chicago on the same parking lot volvo's AWD event was held on.

The fundamental difference in the cars (3301/s40t5awd) was that the 3 felt/handled significantly better close the the limits. The AWD volvo feels much like the FWD version of the car. The volvo's acceleration really felt 90% as good. The 3 moved better with the automatic ( not a concern to me ). The stick made more of a difference with the volvo.

I thought I had read that it was being introduced as AWD, but I now believe I misunderstood/mis-remembered

Now that's one good looking car!

I wish I had a four car garage (and an extra $40,000)...

Well said dhanley.

I finally had a chance to drive the new E90 (325i and 330i, both with 6-speed and Sport package).

While I'm lukewarm about their looks, the drive was sublime.

The 330i s used in the ultimate drive were all automatics. :O

I had a chance to drive the 330i with the 6-speed, but a cop followed me for most of the test drive, so i never had a chance to really open it up. :/

There's a few things about the new 3 that leave me lukewarm--slightly short on torque,no spare,maybe too much electronics--but now i've driven basically all the cars in the category, and in my opinion at least, it handles better than the rest of the group by a significant margin.

Volvo is an excellemt corporate citizen--they give to some great causes and their plants are very low on pollution and the cars are eminently recycleable. That's a point for them, to me at least.

I'd get either car through european delivery:

330i($30,720)+cold weather($910)+destination($695)+dealer profit($1000)-cca discount($500)-1 free plane ticket($400)

s40t5(26,375)+premium package($2,195)+climate package($675)+audio package($895)+xenon($445)+dstc($675)-2 free plane tickets($800)

bmw = 32,425
volvo = 30,460

(the volvo euro price is no haggle--the main diff is the volvo has leather and the bmw has 'ette. But i don't want leather--however, i do want sunroof and memory seats, which is in a package on the s40t5. I wish the select package was still available on the t5. It'd be cheaper than premium, and used to have the upgraded audio as well)

For that price difference, i'd stick with the BMW--i think it's simply just more fun to drive--and i also think i'd more than make up the price difference when it came to resale.

Volvo leads the automotive industry in safety and another very important aspect, quality for life - the environment. Yes their plants are among the most environmentally friendly, and so are their cars - in the future nearly 95% of all materials in a Volvo can be recycled, and Volvo vehicles conintue to achieve EPA's highest ratings for emission control. Every time you drive your Volvo, its PremAir radiator system converts ground level ozone into pure oxygen. Yes your Volvo helps clean up the environment each and every time you drive it.

Some people may be allergic to the smell of a new car, try a new Volvo. Inside a Volvo is the cleanest, most human-friendly cabin in the world, from the all-non-toxic materials to superb air filtration system, to the ergonomic interior and comfortable seats . That kind of quality for your safety, health and environment is invaluable.

Personally, even if a Volvo costs more than BMW, there are still more reasons and benefits to own a Volvo. Right now it costs less, so the choice is easy for me, Volvo over BMW.

BTW, the difference for European Delivery price is insignificant because less than 3% of Americans buy car this way. EU Delivery price is better for BMW, for Volvo you can get same or better deal at dealers.
The real world difference in price between the S40T5 & 330i is about $8,000-$10,000 at the dealerships.

$30K - Volvo S40 T5
$38-40K - BMW 330i

I have a brand new (one year old) Volvo (xc90). It STINKS inside. It may be non-toxic, but it still stinks of new car smell.

I agree that volvo does well in qualiy-of-life measures. However, the cars don't drive similarly.

However, i think you are again wrong about the price difference in the cars--IF equipped similarly. Of course, it all depends on options. After all, a 325i has only 3 fewer hp than a s40t5, and gets to 60 in 6.7 sec vs 6.7 in the volvo.
