Actually, you have to consider this is a small sampling of people who actually own a Pilot, and of course people who post are willing to post problems. In reality, most people who own these do just fine. No matter who makes the car, there will be some people who have problems, its just that with Japanese cars your odds are better of having a reliable car.

What "many mechanical, electrical, structural problems" are you talking about? Sure, there are a few reports of issues here and on other forums, but it's hardly epidemic. And characterizing a squeak or rattle as a "structural problem" seems a little dramatic. In fact, given the number of Pilot owners here and on other Pilot boards, the number of reported issues seems low to me. Log on to a Jeep Cherokee or Ford Explorer board if you want to see literally thousands of posts about problems. And there are quite a few instances of 2003 Pilot owners with 100K+ miles and only routine maintenance.

The only good objective reliability data we have (Consumer Reports) indicates that Pilots are among the most reliable of all the mid-size SUVs. The Toyotas may be slightly better but the difference is small.

There have been several studies that have compared the quality of the same car designs built in different countries and there has never been any correlation between the country of manufacture and the quality of the product. Japanese nameplate vehicles tend to have higher quality no matter where they are built - Japan, Canada, or Alabama. There are some noteable exceptions, but they tend to be associated with joint-ventures such as Ford building Mazdas. Ford-built Mazdas have not matched the reliability of the Mazda-built Mazdas in Japan. But the Honda plants in Canada and Alabama are run by Honda and build only Hondas.

Your right, the Explorer and Cherokee sites beat the heck out of the Pilot's problem postings, for sheer volume, but nowhere does "hos" describe "squeaks and rattles" as being structural problems, so I don't see where he/she is being "dramatic".

I'm guessing he/she is probably referring to issues which have multiple postings here, with many owners making multiple, unsuccessful trips to dealer service bays. There are a few re-occuring themes here (unresolved steering wheel/tire shaking, and excessive wind noise, to name 2 examples) that may or may not fall into the "structural problem" category, but that doesn't make them any less annoying to the owners experiencing them or make potential owners any less wary.

Your posting said...My wife has noticed the audio (both nav and stereo) has gone off. This lasted for about 20 minutes, with no apparent cause. There was a loud "popping" sound, and the audio mysteriously returned. Sounds like some sort of electrical gremlin.

My 2006 Honda Pilot EXL with NAV exhibited the exact same situation. The audio was dead for about 20 minutes after starting the car and then came back with a loud popping sound. This happened only once and we were up in the mountains where the temperature was below freezing. We are normally not in such cold weather (we live near San Francisco) and assumed it was related to the cold and came back after the car warmed up.

Did your audio problem occur under similar weather conditions?

there are a whole lot more jeeps and explorers for someone post about than pilots. not only that, they have been around for 15 and more years. plenty of time for anyone to post a problem.

I have an '06 AWD and have a question on the AWD system. I probably haven't read enough in the manual, but am sure one of you can give me a quick answer. Is the AWD engaged at all times and will operate at any speed, as long as the system detects that it is needed? Also for anyone looking at mileage estimates. I am in a cold weather area (MA/NH border) and do warm the vehicle up for about 5 minutes in the morning. I have a commute to work each way of 3.5 miles, with some stop and go. I am getting about 12 mpg under these conditions. Obviously with a 7 mile round trip each day this is not a major factor for me as far as fuel cost. I have taken one long highway trip and did get the 21 mpg as advertised.

My wife thought I was nuts....we arranged a purchase via the internet and when we showed up to drive the specific vehicle, I heard that window noise. Drove me nuts. We drove 4 others at the dealer until we found one that it was absent or at least minimal......we bought that one as we still liked the pilot compared to the others vehicles we looked at. But I must say, on a couple, it was downright loud and then the wife beleived me. Dealer told me they never had any complaints..even took me in to the service guy who said no complaints. So let us know what your dealer says. We have had ours about a month and I dont drive more than once a week, but I've only noticed it with the radio off...test driving I leave everything off, so slightest noise was noticeable.

I am a noise freek and did have a problem of a side window vibration/noise in a couple Pilots we test drove. I put anohter post on my experience with that. But this was irregardless of speed, just with bumps. I think wind noise is minimal compared to my 96 T-100 and vs the 97 Explorer we sold for the Pilot. Overall, I think it is a pretty quiet ride.........not as quiet as the Volvo XC 90 (and I thought it was more a difference in road noise vs wind), but that was like the only thing we like about the Vovlo more than the pilot and figured I'd keep the 10k in my pocket. But it would be interesting if anyone with those wind deflectors could add any commets.

The AWD system in the Pilot is always 'ready' but in normal situations is front wheel drive. When it detects slippage of the front wheels it automatically sends power to the rear wheels. So, it's not like 4WD trucks where you have to engage 4WD, it's all seamlessly automatic. Just drive.

If you get stuck in mud and snow, you can engage the VTM lock which is a pseudo 4WD mode. But since more SUVs never leave the asphalt, I doubt you'll ever need this.

Hope this helps

AWD and 4WD is always ambiguous to me and often the sales people don't even know!
Is one tire normally spinning up front and if it loses traction, only one rear tire in the back starts spinning? I limited slip or positraction an option? And just exactly how is the VTM work? How many wheels spinning? I remember seeing a Mercedes 430 with one wheel up in the air spinning and the others doing nothing. And all he was trying to do was drive up on a friends lawn-- which by the way, there was already and Accord, Outback, and 323 on the lawn; it was rather embarrassing for him.
