2002 Golf,4dr, GLS, 2.0L, 5 Speed, stock tire size, 99% highway using the lowest octane, no tune up, no add-on/mods, not using cruise control, some bumper to bumper work commuter traffic - 30-31MPG
The engine is at a high RPM at highway speeds of 65MPH.

Interstate, cruise control on 75, A/C off: 25 MPG
Daily Commute, 60/40 to 70/30 mix of highway and bumper-to-bumper, 19-21 MPG

I think the automatic really kills the mileage in this car, winds up being the same or a little worse than my 2001 Buick Regal GS with it's 3.8L supercharged V6.

The heated seats and airbags make no difference as all TDIs have the airbags. My 03 TDI has all options (except for the automatic, which is not a good choice with the TDI). I regularly best the EPA numbers. Lately, with higher fuel costs, I have lowered my highway speed to 67 mph. With the general slowdown I have noticed out there, it is not too slow for most traffic conditions. And my highway mpg has gone from just over 50 to between 55 and 60 mpg.

I have had my 2003 Golf TDI for almost 6 years. I have noted every filling. During the first 5 years my yearly average has been 49.5 MPG. Last year I began hypermling. I do not like the term and the phrase ecodriving For economy and ecology). Last year I averaged 58.5 MPG and over 700 miles per tank. I hope to improve upon this this year.
