I agree Subaru has done a nice job with their line of AWD vehicles. My family owns three Subarus (Outback, ForesterX2) and they have all been excellent values. They have historically been very functional and economical vehicles. In recent years, they have added performance to the mix.

I am curious to see the Tribeca, but I don't believe the Subaru image will allow it to compete with the Luxury brands. Perhaps Subaru should consider introducing it's own Luxury brand (like everyone else). They certainly have earned the right to try it. I also think hybrid technology would be an excellent fit for Subaru. I've always thought they appealed to the "green" community with a rugged, economical, wild, "outdoors" image.

I think if Lexus or Toyota want to build hybrids here, they certainly can without sending pollution monitors off the chart, and I have proof !! Read on folks !!

Gary, I debunked that "much more polluting" in the manufacturing process myth a few months ago. I went back and found my post from last time I refuted you on that point:

"Gary, you are ONCE AGAIN exagerrating that "additional pollution" factor. I posted a PDF file a few days ago that showed that the "lifetime pollution" for the Hybrid was far lower than the non-hybrid similar car, even with the pollution being merely "slightly higher" in the mfg phase. Only VERY SLIGHTLY higher. The chart I saw used "giga joules" as the gauge, and the manufacturing process had Hybrids at 68 and non-hybrids at 60, but at the end, in the Lifetime measurement, the Hybrids were at 170 and the gasser at 265. So hybrids are VERY SLIGHTLY more polluting in the manufacturing process, but by the end of the life cycle the gas version has a FAR higher pollution score.

So there is no "hybrid manufacturing means more pollution" factor that would keep Toyota or any other hybrid manufacturer in trouble with the EPA. ( Ford makes the Escape Hybrid here. )

I have that PDF file saved on my computer, so if anyone wants to see it, send a request to larrysinggmail.com and I will e-mail it to you.

larsb,

It is best if you don't post your e-mail address publicly in a forum. The web engines will pick it up, and the next thing you know the spammers will pick it up. Poof! There goes your inbox...

the Highlander Hybrid is mechanically the same and made in the same factory. You pay $10000 more for the styling and a better stereo in the RX440h.

I agree, the Highlander should be an excellent choice for people who don't care as much about the Lexus luxury image, comfort, convenience and safety. Certainly the styling and audio are superior in the RX 400h and these are some of the other features I wanted.

1 yr. better warranty
AWD vs. 4WD
New advanced stability control (VDIM)
18" vs. 17" wheels, better tires
Better hitch capabilities
Power liftgate ( this is very convenient)
Superior power seat height adjustments, memory, and telescopic steering (good for shorter drivers)
Free loaner cars/pickup delivery to my house
One touch power windows
Auto -dimming mirrors
Reverse tilt mirrors and rear view camera
Superior instrumentation and layout (personal preference)
Driver knee airbag
Xenon adaptive headlamps with washers
Rain sensing wipers (this is even better than I imagined)
Video system
Superior Nav system upgrade with voice recognition
Somewhat more cargo capacity and versatility
Bluetooth capability for hands free phone (this was a must for me)

The Highlander does have an option for a third row if that is important to anyone. It will likely be a big seller and very reliable.

Doesn't the Lexus also have the laser type adaptive cruise control too?

The Lexus 400h does not have laser cruise control, even as an option. For some reason, it also does not have the tire pressure monitor as in the RX 330.

I guess the Highlander would be a good alternative if someone wants to save a few bucks. It will be interesting to see if the dealers are going to try and gouge the public as they did when the Prius was first released.
