Should Mercury make a new rwd coupe? by xkss

I think Mercury should take the new Mustang's chassis and give it a new exterior and interior. It could get sales that otherwise would not have gone to the Mustang (some don't like the retro styling or that there will be a lot of them on the roads). Here is the 2003 Mercury Messenger Concept

I think it would be a good idea for Mercury to build a coupe RWD or not. As it is Mercury's lineup consists of rebadged Ford vehicles, the Explorer is the Mountaineer, Crown Victoria is the Grand Marquis, Five Hundred is the Montego, Taurus is Sable, Freestar is Moneterey, Escape is the Mariner.

Mercury should use the same Mustang platform, but they should lose the retro styling. I like the new Mustang's looks, but Ford should keep them just for the Mustang. The new coupe should have some luxury touches, such as navigation system, premium audio system, woodgrain trim and brushed aluminum.

No matter which way you look at it, Mercury desperately needs a model that isn't just "another rebadged Ford". Don't get me wrong, I like Mercury styling, except it's kind of sad when you consider that their entire lineup are just fancy Fords.

I think it's a helluva a good idea. Bring back the original concept for the Cougar (reskinned, more luxurious Mustang) based on the Mustang chassis. Go a LITTLE BIT retro (but not nearly as far as the Mustang) with a more modern interior. Oh, and bring back the sequential taillights.....

Heck, the Mustang could be moved slightly more 'down market' (no power seats, a bit less sound deadening material, etc.) for the more 'great bang for the buck crowd' with a new Cougar (better interior appointments, nav system, quieter/cushier ride) for the 'performance with luxury crowd'.

Cougars used to be cool, and Mercury needs some younger buyers. I'm all for it
