You guys are on the ball, it is indeed a 1949 Delahaye 175 with a Sedan DeVille body by Saoutchik.
Saoutchik was probably the most flamboyant of the French coachbuilders that dominated auto styling during the 30s and 40s. Changes in French tax laws killed their business in the 50s and the Italians took over.
The pictured car went for $1.8 million
Barret-Jackson last week.

Right make. Wrong model.

I will guess Opel Kadett.
They sold Kadetts in Brazil as Chevys, and that looks awfully familiar.
They're bigger than Corsas, about a size up.

The pictured car is Kadett E based - but is not an Opel. UK variant would be Vauxhall Astra.

Actually, the car is a 1989 Vauxhall Belmont sold in the UK. We suffered with this car as the Daewoo-built Pontiac LeMans.

Oh that's right, Belmont was the trunkback version, I think.
I remember a family friend had a new LeMans, ca. 1988-89. I don't recall them having any big issues with it (of course, they dumped it by 1994-95 or so), but it was definitely built to that low price.

Brazil only saw the 3 door hatch, IIRC.
