WHY are the '04 4x4's so low?? I have one...and have been disappointed in the economy from day 1. (This is my 2nd Cummins. I average 12-14mpg, when I'm towing on hwy, I got 10-12 at 72mph.
I can eke out a little better when I drive like Grandma, and keep the cruise on 55. 17 is the best I've ever done. My truck has 45,000 miles on it, larger tires, and I keep the fuel filter changed religiously. I put a Bullydog on it and while it absolutely smoked, my leadfoot didn't help the economy ...it actually went down! So I didn't buy the bullydog.
Should I try another chip? What can I do? I love everything else about my truck...surely there's something I can do. The dealer says nothing's wrong, but admits it should do better.
Thanks for any advice...

I am not sure if it is just the 04 model or more to do with 4x4? I would suggest adding locking hubs to your truck. I have been told by several reliable sources that this will increase your mileage by 2 to 3 MPG. I have recieved better mileage with my Quadzilla vs. factory (2-4MPG better, if you can keep your foot out of it). I actually stated 5 to 6 MPG better in my first post about my Quadzilla. What I found was that the chip interferes with the digital mileage meter. Once I actually put it on paper it was around 2MPG pulling trailers. It definetly seems to help my MPG.

A 4x2 2500 regular cab with 3.73s will indeed break 25 mpg on the highway. My 3500 4x4 Quad Cab dually will see 21 if I baby it.

I recently bought a 2000 2500 4X4 quad cab long bed diesel auto and this is my first diesel. A friend installed the edge ez in his ford diesel and loves it. So I started to do some research and have seen chips and programmers use and wondering their advantage. I have a 25" toy hauler trailer I will be pulling loaded about 8000 lbs. I would like a little more power and better gas mileage is always a good thing. Any info for a new be would be help. Thanks!!

Yes, I do believe Cummins is capable of getting 25MPG. I have friends that constantly get 24 MPG, mostly highway driving with some city. Personaly I keep my foot in it way to much. I usually average between 18-19 MPG, pulling a trailer mixed with highway and city driving (loaded/unloaded,no trailer, with trailer) Another words, I have not ran a full tank without mixing pulling into the equation. If I strap a loaded trailer on and run until empty, I will probably average 16 MPG (12-14 before the chip). --I had a hard time believing this also. After seeing my truck break in and watching the numbers, I do see where these trucks can hit the 25 mark.--

First time Dodge Cummins owner... need help! by jaybird8

I am about to purchase a 2006 4x4 quad cab short bed Dodge w/ cummins. Ive been reading this message board quite a bit and have a couple of questions...

I will be 95% on the highway, empty 90% of the time. so I am mostly interested in getting better mileage... can someone tell me the best thing to do?

I read somewhere about locking hubs, is that something that can only be done after-market? or can the factory do that?

And the chips... are there any that will not void my warranty? thanks!

95% highway - you will definetly be pleased driving highway miles.

Locking hubs - probably can be added at the factory for a substantial price. I would buy aftermarket and install them myself. A buddy of mine said it can easily be done with limited tools in about 2 hours per hub.

Warranty and Chips (Quadzilla)- it plugs into your exsisting wiring at your fuel rail. If you have to take your truck back for factory repairs;unplug the chips wiring harness and plug your factory connectors back in, remoave chip wiring harness and chip (takes about 10 minutes). The factory can not tell you ever had this chip on your truck. This chip only tricks your computer into giving more HP. It does not modify your factory settings. If that makes any since?
