You could hold out for an after market suspension upgrade that would improve the handling. Usually at the cost of ride comfort, tho. The other thing that does it for me is leg room. At 6'4" (mostly leg I just wish the 400 was available with the adjustable height air suspension like the 330

| Thanks for the tip. We will take a look at it. I rented a Highlander in Tampa a few months ago, granted not a hybrid, but I did not notice a truckiness at all - maybe that's because I was comparing to our 4Runner - Now THAT is trucky! | |
I test drove both. I thought the Highlander hybrid was a big upgrade from the nonhybrid Highlander whereas the difference was less for the RX 400h vs Rx330 but my wife chose the RX400h because of the bluetooth and the power trunk.

Could anyone comment on the "truckiness" of the Highlander hybrid I've been reading about on this board? I have a regular Highlander ('02) whose lease is about to end and want to get another because I LOVE it, but am interested in the hybrid. I don't find my '02 trucky at all. (Like someone else said- the 4-Runner, now THATS trucky!) Is the hybrid more trucky that the regular engine model? Possibly something with the redistributed weight of the battery packs affects it?

I have yet to feel the 'vortex' of a passing 18 wheeler. The acceleration is instant and invigorating enough to challenge an Audi or two when they try to go round you, unknowing that you have Hybrid HyperDrive !!! The transmisson (CVT?) is the smoothest acceleration that I have experienced in any vehicle, it just feels like it will go on forever... Slightly on the negative side is the advertized vs real time fuel mileage... Granted, I mostly drive the Interstate and of late have had the AC on most of the time, My MPG has dropped consistently from initial 26 to 24.8 to 23.4...NOT a good trend. However a 'fix' may be available as was presented in this thread. I also need to fill up The cloth seats also leave something to be desired, they easily 'capture' dirt and my usual 'fix' of placing 'wooly-backs' on them are not allowed due to the various airbag placements. Overall with the price per barrel rising due mostly to speculation the 400h and HH will definetly fill a niche in the market and just might become the latest 'darling' of the cogniscenti...I still keep my 4Runner in working condition for any real trucking eventuality. |
