Sounds like the modern systems then. Maybe they have been refined. I haven't read anything bad about the BMW and Aprilia setups. I suspect if you roll off when shifting, it is smoother too - even my fintail's primitive non-torque convertor automatic shifts a lot better if you kind of ease it along like you would a manual. I've never driven one of the modern clutchless manual cars.
I am seriously thinking about working my way up to one of those bikes with clutchless upshifts if I take up the hobby. Less left hand cramps, and probably better shifts than I could do anyway.

Once you're cruising you don't often shift, I'd just like to have a gear indicator like you asked for in the CCB thread.
The clutch was never a hassle.

Maybe if I could have a clutch tuned to be light. I am just imagining a hellish time if I commuted here. I rode a few bikes, older and not well maintained. One clutch on a neglected early 90s Suzuki something just killed me.
I know Gixxers from 08+ have a gear indicator, I think some BMWs too. And you can get an aftermarket one, but it looks a little hokey.
Too much clutchwork in a car would annoy me too, although it seems easier in a car to just leave it in 2nd if speeds are low.

Bikes are so light, you can get away with less shifting.
Every once in a while I crave riding again, but I had three (yes, 3) stolen from me at one point or another so I swore them off.

Unless you also lack torque. I'd never keep a bike in an unsecured place. Too risky, especially in this economic climate.
I am OK now with the tiptronic in the E55, which I shift just to listen to the car. Maybe I am lazy. I shift the fintail more, just to squeeze out some more momentum out of an engine that has torque measured in inches rather than feet, along with second gear start.

Torque is an issue with smaller displacement engines, but shouldn't be with the bigger bikes you've mentioned. Even my XL250 could easily start in 2nd gear.
Theft - I accept blame for the first, 2nd was stolen with chains and lock and all, 3rd the thief removed a wheel in broad daylight under video surveillance and made off with everything but the wheel.
Twas not meant to be for me, I'm afraid.

Well you aren't really going to compare driving instructions on a race track with everyday drivers, are you?
For the record, I'm not all that fond of turbo cars either, but I am a realist and I can see which way the wind is blowing.
Diesels are great for low end grunt and are a perfect match for a turbo---marriage made in heaven, and (blasphemy!) really, turbo diesels should be mated to automatics for most drivers. It's bad enough so many drivers can't work a manual transmission properly on a gas car; they'd be twice as bad on a diesel.

I noticed this when I drove a DSG-equipped VW Jetta TDI. The Turbo-diesel had so much torque it didn't matter what gear you were in. I decided I wouldn't lose anything if I let the computer pick the gears.

The Suzuki 250 cruiser style thing I used in MSF class (not easy for a taller rider) didn't have enough torque to make a 2nd gear start easy - I couldn't get it to work. Abused bike though, that couldn't have helped. I have a secured garage here...I'd chain the bike to the car with some kind of titanium carbon system, or even park it in my living room - I am single, so I can pull that off
Torque can overcome a lot of problems.

Sure, I am going to compare myself to the Porsche instructors. After all, I went 2-2 plus 2 HBP in my adult baseball game yesterday. I also stole 2nd 3 times without getting caught. So I immediately came home and compared myself to Bryce Harper. Granted, my 17 year old daughter reminded me that he's only 2 years older than her and I'm 37 years older than him, but hey, we can all fantasize a little.
I agree that turbo and diesel are a great match.
