Honda sell a ton of these. The word has been out for a while now on the new world order CRX, so people are expecting great things in this little package.

I recall a buddy from Boeing who drive his girlfriend's red late 80's Honda CRX around in absolute joyful glee! He said it was a ball to drive because of it's great acceleration and handling.

It does perk up my ears a bit, too. And yes, one must have a manual tranny in this pup, for sure-for sure!

"Even though it had an odd shifter on the column,(only 4 speed plus reverse like that I know of, as well)"

The other one like this that I am aware of
[ 4 fwd speeds on the column + reverse
drove one once - same time frame = late 60s ]
is the Peugeot 404.

Odd indeed...
But better than the 3 on the column Plymouth
I was driving at the time....

I owned another French car with a column mounted 4-speed manual shifter; the Renault 16. Wiki link

The car had many good qualities, but was just too French for my tastes. The designers seemed to value doing things differently from the norm, just for the sake of being different.

The column shifter was not one of my favorite features.

The best tranny I ever drove was the all-synchro 4speed on my buddy's '67 E-Type 4.2, the best I've owned was the delightful five speed on my '71 Fiat 124 Spider 1600.

The worst? For reliability the boxes on my Saab 9000 Turbos and for general driveability the five speed on my '91 Taurus SHO with throws that were way too long and a clutch that was just out of phase with the rest of the drivetrain. The Moss crash box on a lady friend's '62 E-Type 3.8 wasn't great, what a difference the new box on the Series II made!

Best Automatic, the (GM-built!) 5-speed Steptronic on my BMW 528i. Worst Auto-
the klutzy 4speeder in my MIL's Buick LeSabre, it's incapable of a smooth shift over 3000 RPM.

I sampled one of these back-to-back with an 06 Miata at the Zoom Zoom Live event they hosted, and I liked the Miata better, but it was very close.

Looking for an upgrade to a mid sized General Motors car or SUV with a stick. Can't seem to find one. Any ideas?

I don't think you are going to find one in anything bigger than a Cobalt. I seriously doubt they offer them in their SUVs. It is sad, really.

Subaru does, though.

This may be a stretch, but Suzuki offers one in the Grand Vitara, last time I checked, and GM may still own a small share of them (maybe not any more).

Drive a Grand Vitara and then a Forester.

Any others?

Manual GMs by plekto

GM does offer manual in the CTS. The first generation with the 3.6 was actually a nice car and can be had fairly reasonably priced. The other car of note is the original new GTO. The one with the LS1 engine and manual gets 29mpg highway(!), so it's as fuel efficient as a typical GM sedan but is RWD with 350HP.

Either will more than suffice, used.

Can't you get a G8 sedan V8/manual? That would be a neat sports sedan.
