Jetta 2006 vs Mazda3 SP23 by skytzo

With the release of the 2006 Jetta in about 9 days, and as a new car buyer, I am looking between the new Jetta and the Mazda3 SP23.

Anyone driven the Mazda3 SP23 and can compare it at least to the Reviews or Specs of the new Jetta, since the Jetta now has a new body, interior and engine.

Hi I was just about to try to start a conversation just like this. I'm looking to get a car that's about 1 year old. I haven't tried very many but liked the Mazda 3. One of the things I was wondering about is what the reliability is on the 04 jetta. CR has jetta's having bad reliability although JD Power shows initial quality as being very good. Has the 3 had many problems at all?

CR gave the 3 very high reliability rating by creakid1

The Focus also has become very reliable lately.

No wonder this semi-Focus Mazda is much much more reliable than the Mazda6 & RX-8.

I already saw the new Corolla-shape Jetta's all over here in one of the dealers in L.A. County, which is only over 100 miles from the Mexican border.

If you have to wait 9 more days to compare the 2 cars, then the limited-production SP23 might be sold out by then!

I can tell you that the Jetta will be quieter & rides more comfortably, based on the Brit road tests on the Golf V. & the Mazda3 still doesn't come w/ the stability control in this country.

The most recent AUTOCAR magazine complimented the Golf V's ride in its long-term test:

"It's as if the dampers are filled with honey. Sadly, the steering rack feels a bit like it's filled with honey as well -- it's accurate but there is little feeling."

I wonder how the Mazda 3 did in its crash test...

April 24, 2005

NEW CRASH TEST RESULTS:
VOLKSWAGEN NEW JETTA ACES SIDE IMPACT TEST;
ALSO EARNS GOOD RATING IN FRONTAL TEST

ARLINGTON, VA — The 2005 Volkswagen Jetta earned good ratings in both frontal offset and side impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Plus the Jetta is the first vehicle to earn the top rating of good in every individual measurement category (injury measures, head protection, and structural design) of the Institute's side impact test. This car is designated a "best pick" for side crash protection, and it's a good performer for frontal crash protection. The performance of the Jetta in these tests plus its acceptable rating for seat/head restraint design in rear impact tests make it the top-rated car overall in the inexpensive midsize class. The redesigned Jetta, which is larger than its predecessor model, was introduced in the 2005 model year, and these results apply to the new larger Jetta.

"The Jetta was the first vehicle to ace our side impact test," says Institute president Brian O'Neill. "It's the best performer among midsize inexpensive cars. Its structural performance was better than the second- and third-best models, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. This new Jetta design shows what manufacturers can do to improve occupant protection in serious side impacts when cars are hit by taller and heavier SUVs and pickup trucks."

I wonder how the Mazda 3 did in its crash test...
Unfortunately IIHS hasn't done a side crash test on the Mazda3 with side air bags (and side air curtains) yet. Comparing crash test results of one model with side airbags to a different model without them is pretty useless. The Mazda3 did good in the frontal crash test.

No, if VW makes a Jetta GLI with the 2.0T and 6-speed manual they'll have my attention.

The GLI is supposed to arrive around July 2005.

VW has a long way to go to catch up with Mazda's reliability! Having known the owner of a 2001 Jetta, I wouldn't go NEAR one!

Jetta 2006 and Consumer Reports (CR) reliability ratings by autonomous

Kudos to VW for getting the SAB/SAC on the Jetta!

Considering the terrible reliability ratings the previous Jetta / Beetle / Golf have had, it may be wise to give the latest model some time to see if the issues identified by CR have worked themselves out. The issues in the previous models included electrical, power equipment, ignition, body integrity and hardware.

On the other hand, CR noted many positive things about the new Jetta including it is "fairly nimble", "ride was comfortable and quiet", "more upscale", "the rear seats are roomier than the Audi A4's". Three powertrains are listed: 2.5L 5 cyl. (150 hp); 2.0L turbo 4 cyl. (200 hp); 1.9L 4 turbodiesel (100 hp).

As mazda6s has noted it was the particular test model submitted by Mazda that seemed to have failed the IIHS, so the Mazda3 SP23 with SAB and SAC may still be worthy of consideration.

Yessss ... Note that the Camry with SABs fared almost as well as the Jetta in the IIHS side-impact crash test, but just as in the recent IIHS test of small cars, the non-SAB-equipped Camry got a poor rating.

I'm waiting to see the results of that crash test with ANY Mazda3 ... not just the SP23 ... with SABs.

the S40, in terms of price, reliability, quietness, & the availability of curtain airbags & soft-riding suspension.

The only other Euro-designed car available in N.A. w/ the state-of-the-art rear Control Blades & still tops reliability rating is the recent Focus, per CR's '03 & '04 chart in the April '05 issue.
