My 2006 Prius starts by itself when I am out of the car. Has this happened to anyone else? This has happened three times.

could you explain how you normally start a prius? is there a "start" button as there is in a lexus? if so - maybe the switch is bad or there is an electrical cabling problem.
if the car can be started with a FOB, maybe some localized interference from a HAM Radio operator, a commerical radio, a nearby power line, another FOB on the same frequency.

i believe putting your foot on the brake would be a safety interlock which is necessary to start the car.
i was thinking if this wasn't necessary, maybe a child with a FOB is activating, or perhaps the FOB in your pocket.
if you do need to depress brake in order for pushing start to be honored, then i'd say either another person is entering your car and starting it to cause your sanity to be called into question, or there is some computer mis-programming, or there is some emi (electro-magnetic interference) being generated from some local source that is impinging on the electronics of your car causing it to think a person is following the steps to start the car.
then again, perhaps your vehicle is possessed.

I'm new to this site... I have a 2004 prius -- mine has had intermitten glitches and it has been starting by itself for over two years and it gets pretty upsetting when I have been out of the vehicle for hours and it is on when I return. At times the windows will roll down on their own and that really "sucks" when it happens during a rain storm or in the winter. I can't take my notebook into the car unless it is completely powered off or the car may not start. At times, I can't get the doors open with the automatic entry on my person if I have a cell phone on my person and have to use the key. At times the pushbutton won't start and at times it looks as if it is started but it won't shift into gear. I had so many problems within the warranty period that the dealer told me that Toyota (national) had authorized them to start charging me for warranty work -- I switched dealers at the time that the warranty ran out. If all the little glitches weren't bad enought --- 25 mpg in town and up to 38 / 39 on the highway is about as good as it gets. I wish that I could trust the fuel guage but that's another story.
I still love the way it drives on the road - but it is a real lemon.
Simply - I have been way more disappointed than pleased with the vehicle. I have had lots of suggestions from other prius owners - yet nothing has paid off.

hi there. may i make a suggestion? if you don't like your prius and are not having any good luck with it someone will buy it real quick. they are selling very fast and IF its in good shape and has been treated well then you shouldn't have any problem trying to sell it. to bad it doesn't get along with you because i think they are very fine cars. take care and good luck to you. pete

Thanks Pete - I have thought about selling it - yet I pretty much hate to give the problems away to an unsuspecting buyer - such as would happen with a trade in if there wasn't disclosuree.
Have a good one...

Why not? Toyota didn't have any problem giving them to you.
