I've had 3 Z's from 1985 to 1987 and they have all had a problem with cold air switching to hot air when manifold vacuum drops. The AC shops charge $800 and up to fix the problem but I'm working on a cheaper solution. After several trips to the wrecking yard I've worked out how to get to the vaccuum lines and baffles under the dash. The last obsticle is getting access to the linkage without cutting through the plastic air duct. Today I'm heading out to the wrecking yard to continue my quest. Thought I would post this and see if anyone has been able to fix this problem without having to do remove the display unit behind the steering wheel.

I bought my great "Z" new in '87, and now need to replace some rusted body parts - mainly starting with the hatchback. ( got some great water leaks). Anyone point me in the right direction to find a good one at the right price. The best auto-body shop in the area will repair mine for $1000 with no guarantees - "choke".! I seem to be able to find tons of parts for the running gear, but little to nothing on major exterior body parts. |

| It seems that 1985 through 1987 Z air conditioners are prone to a very specific type of problem. When manifold vacuum drops, the air conditioner switches from cold air to hot air. The bad news is that most A/C shops will charge $800 and up to fix it. The problem is typically caused by a vacuum leak under the dash. The control baffles and vacuum lines eventually degrade and leak. I've had 3 300zx's and they have all had this problem. After several trips to the wrecking yard I've worked out a way to get to access the baffles and vacuum controls. The final obstacle is the duct work. When I've worked it out, I plan to post it here but in the mean time I'd like to hear from anyone who has found a way to replace the baffles without cutting through the duct. | |
O.K. If nobody knows whre to find a replacement hatchback, does anyone know where to find major body parts? Maybe there's a parts house specializing in 300ZX's somewhere. Tweeks in Indianapolis used to deaal in Porsche and 300ZX's - but now only Porsche. Any help would be greatly appreaiated. Thanks. Dave
