From what I've heard in the past, the V-6s generally don't get much better mileage than the 4.7 V-8 in the real world. The V-6 seems to be a bit overworked when trying to move a 5000+ lb truck. A good compromise on MPG and performance might be the 4.7 V-8, manual transmission, and the standard 3.55 gears. The towing packing is just additional cooling and wiring, so it has no impact on MPG.

In mixed highway/city driving I see 13.5-15 MPG. That's usually short highway trips (10 miles or less) and short city trips. For straight highway driving, I see 16.5-19. That's with a cruising speed of 70-72 MPH. I also have the 3.92 gears, automatic, and 4x4. My MPG has continued to steadily increase as the truck has gotten older (now at 65K miles). I don't know how much longer that trend will continue.

Just picked up a NEW leftover 05 4.7 V8 club cab 4X4, auto 5 spd, 3:55 rear. Drove from the dealers lot 1/2 mile & loaded the bed 3/4 full with stacked firewood. Hooked up my 3500 lb trailer & a friend for a weekend camping trip. I averaged 11.3 MPG for that first tank of gas. (lots of steep hills). When I got home, I refilled the tank and am currently averageing over 20 MPG. Thats 90% hwy, 10% city driving. No complaints...

WOW - most folks like to break in the rear differential before loading it up like that. It has been said that a new differential oil will run about 20-80 degrees hotter than a worn-in one. (without a load) This heat can destroy the temper on the gears. (if the lube is that hot... imagine the heat on the rubbing surfaces!)

You can expect the MPG to go up-up-up over the first 20,000 miles of driving. The 4.7L engine has some pretty tight clearances that take time to wear in.

My 4.7 v8 mileage by dewaltdakota

I have a 2005 Quad Cab 4x4 Laramie with just under 12k miles and get between 15.1 and 15.5 around town, and between 20.7 and 21.9 running the highway on vacation trips out to the mountains or the beach.

For the highway miles, I also have the added weight of an A.R.E. z-series cap and sprayed in bedliner, plus all of the "stuff" that goes with taking the family on vacation... so to think my mileage could actually be BETTER on the highway is great!

Actually -- a cap on a pickup truck has been shown to INCREASE highway MPG. This is due to the better aerodynamics.

Also, without a cap, removing the tailgate can improve highway MPG.

I have never heard of many people that are getting good MPG on the 4.7 Dakota's with 4x4. Most are in the 13-15 range with mixed highway/city driving. I am surprised at your results. My 2001 Quad 4x4 with a 4.7 never did better that 14.5

Are you calculating the mileage yourself or using the trip computer?

I sold my Dakota due to the poor mileage but want to go back to a truck. I have been leaning towards the Ridgeline but the steep pricetags are hard to take.
