Question from a new owner--and impressions by toybenz

(as of August 17). Is it possible to remove the rear head restraints? I didn't see anything about this in the owner's manual, and when I tried to remove them completely by holding the little button in, I couldn't remove the rear headrests. I would think since the seatbacks fold down, these could be removed--but maybe I am wrong! Otherwise, first impressions are that the car is very solid, with great steering and flat cornering. Feels Germanic in that respect. Also, the fit an finish is very good--I only found one piece of dash trim misaligned, which hopefully will be easy to fix. I appreciate the illuminated door switches, trip computer, and gas struts for the hood. I wished I'd gotten factory XM and 6-disc, both of which apparently are expensive/impossible to add now. I have the XE, Berry Red w/grey leather. A great-looking car, IMHO.

We were Honda owners for years until we bought an XR 6 months ago, and its turning out to be the best car buying decision we have ever made. Fantastic car.

Hey, that's good to hear! Appreciate the feedback.

On a side note, does anyone have the rubberized center armrest for the XR? It shows scuff marks very easily. Dealer said they'd replace it but I think I'm going to have to get it replaced over and over again. The car has less than 150 miles on it but lots of scuffs on the center armrest. Thanks for all the comments guys. They really pushed me to this car, even though I was holding out for the Malibu (just announced pricing of $26,995 on the LTZ which is in line for a top of the line XR at $27,319).

just got a techno gray XR model. I noticed the same thing about the armrest, it seems to show scuffs easily. Have no idea why they didnt use a softer material there. Also noticed the window map pockets are too small and shallow to hold anything substantial. The trunk opening issue is known to everyone here I'm sure. Those are the main complaints I have. Quietness and ride are top notch, as is the sound system.

I mainly got it over Malibu due to it being more uncommon. The Malibu is likely to be a huge seller but I like it nearly as much, if not slightly more than Aura.

Boy, we sound like the same person. I couldn't agree more. I too like the Malibu look slightly more than the Aura but I don't think they'll deal on the Malibu initially, especially not giving a $2,500 incentive right off the bat. Maybe a year from now but I wanted a new car now, not next year.

As for your other comments. I never really used the map pockets in my other car so it doesn't bother me too much. Trunk opening doesn't bother me either. Ride is the best and the kids love the back seat radio controls and headsets.

I dont think the MAlibu will have any real incentives in 2007 so you would have to be willing to wait. I am curious as to whether or not they addressed some of the minor interior issues with the aura in the Malibu. Based on the pics it appears the Malibu has a better armrest material. Dont know about the door panels though.

The trunk opening size isnt the issue, its the fact that it opens about 1" when you hit the button. C&D noted this in their comparison test and GM shuld have fixed it. My parents car has gas struts and it still opens at least 3" or so when you pop open the trunk.

I think its a good thing that GM has more than one nice sedan out, its nice to know people actually have trouble deciding which one to get. I suspect Malibu LTZ will be rare but most people will think all Malibus are the same and thus you will have a fairly common car.

I have had my new Aura XR for a few days now. I absolutely love this car. The styling, handling, and acceleration are all above average for what you would expect in this price range. Also, dealing with friendly Saturn dealer is a definite plus.

keep your eye on the long term blog updates on inside line for the XR model they have. There havent been too many compliments on the car so far. They dont feel it stacks up well to the much loved long term camry so far and they have had an issue with the steering rack shroud popping off for no apparent reason.

Edmunds are Toyota lovers, the same way Car and Driver are Honda lovers. You're not going to change that overnight. I don't put too much stock into any long term road tests....except my own of course.

I'm going in with an open mind after being a long time Toyota and Honda lover myself, unlike Edmunds. I think the Aura went into this with 2 strikes against it already. 1 for being a GM car and the other for being a Saturn.
