I've been reading this message board for a week or so. I'm contemplating buying a B9 in the next year or so. I currently have a Forester Turbo and have been wondering if I'll feel lagging in the power department. I came from a 98 Honda CR-V and have had my Forester for a little over a year. There are a few comfort type items that look like I'll be able to achieve in the B9 that are missing in the Forester plus the ability for more passengers is appealing to me with a blended family of 6.

I'd like to know if anyone had tried towing with the B9 and what kind of handling you've found? I've also read with interest the ability to hook up an ipod since I've become very attached to mine in the last few months.

Thanks for all the info.

What a bunch of crap. The website author posts six random complaints for 1996 - 1998 vehicles. There was no pattern of failure nor any supporting documentation. Sounds like a cheapskate with an old car trying to get free fixes after the warranty expired.

Karen,

I don't read through this forum topic very much, but I noticed that you are now a proud owner of a B9! Congrats! I remember you from way back when you started listing all the Forester reviews on your website.

So how are you enjoying the new wheels? What did you end up doing with the Forester?

If you are driving a Forester XT, then the B9 will feel slow. The B9 was noticeably slower than my Outback XT, which itself is a tick slower than your Forester. Is that a problem? Hard to say; the B9 is adequately powered standing on its own, and I thought it drove and handled exceptionally well. It's just going to feel slow coming from an XT. Power corrupts.

There is a hack to play an iPod through the Forester stereo -- how are you doing it now?

I don't buy it, for several reasons:

* we would have heard of it here by now
* head gaskets and wheel bearings were more common but they don't mention those
* brakes are way, WAY, WAAAAAAY more powerful than any engine
* the brake interlock - your foot has to be on the brake to shift into R in the first place, so the car would not begin to move even at full power unless your foot slipped off the brake

This quote from that site makes it completely invalid:

"At a high rate of speed" the vehicle was uncontrollable,
and the brakes would not hold.- It continued for about 405 feet

Totally impossible, and they even say the car was in reverse. Redline would limit the speed even if you did floor it, and the brakes would bring the vehicle to a stop even with the engine at full power within 1/10th that distance. Do you really think it would take more than the length of a football field to stop a car limited in speed in reverse by the engine's redline (probably no more than 25mph or so)?

I suspect what really happened is someone's foot slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator yet they're not willing to accept responsibility for the damage they caused.

Andrea: by now you're spoiled with phenomenal acceleration, did you know an XT is quicker to 60mph than a Lamborghini Countache 5000S? (source: C&D anniversary issue)

So yeah, coming from an XT the Tribeca might seem slow. As would that Lamborghini.

A Legacy GT Ltd wagon might be better for you.

Stereo Hassle continued... by b9driver

Subaru emailed me today and sent what was essentially a form letter saying that you can't connect an Ipod to ANY Tribeca. Now we know this is not true, since it's certainly possible on models with the DVD. So clearly I got some schmo who just send quick replies. I responded as follows...

This really doesn't make sense to me. This is the identical unit used in the model with the DVD system and the RSE/Aux button is there and working. This means that the circuitry is there and most probably the connections. My dealer confirms this. Why not provide a method to allow those connections to be used, or at least a schematic so that a service center can do the job? I'm aware that a good tech can probably do this, but everyone benefits if Subaru gets involved with the process. I'd like to add that MANY people use Ipods, Sat. radio and other devices in their cars and this is a very fundamental requirement these days. We spent more than 36 thousand dollars on our Tribeca and we'd really like some technical help. I understand that there's no obvious method, but the stereo is capable 100% of handling an AUX device by design. Can you forward this e-mail to a person who can offer the support we need?

We'll see how they respond. Meanwhile, I'm calling my local SOA Service center tomorrow to talk over the problem with them. I'm determined to find a fix. I really don't want to use FM modulators on a DVD system or Sat. Radio. The button is there. We should be able to use it!

Robert, chances are you got the same response from the same lady at Subaru as I did. Hopefully, they will take notice and start working on this asap. Maybe we can ALL flood Subaru with similar emails?

At any rate, you are my hero for your efforts! Thx on behalf of all iPod/Mp3-ers everywhere.

Hi, Ken! Long time, no see

I (reluctantly) traded my 99 Forester for an 05 OB 2.5i a year ago. When the B9 came along, I knew I needed something bigger than the OB, and I gave it up for more leg room and more oomph. Loving every minute in the Tribeca and looking forward to heading up to Montana in it tomorrow.

Hope it's OK with host Steve that I post my reviews page for the last time for a couple of weeks or so. I don't want to clutter up the site with links, but the reviews are there for you all to read and enjoy. Let me know if I miss any while I'm gone. (What? No forums for two weeks? Argh! How will I cope?)

Emission Ratings and Driver Seat Height adjustment by phan7

I've been reading this message board for a couple of weeks now. I'm planning on buying a B9 Ltd 7 Seater w/ Nav and Atlantic Blue Pearl ext / Gray int this weekend. I had a couple of questions, however, and this board seems to be the best place to ask these.

Is Subaru selling the same emissions-rated model in all 50 states or is it different in states like CA vs PA (where I currently reside)? I'm kind of environmentally consicous (yeah, yeah, I know I'm buying an SUV!) and would prefer to get the same one which is sold in CA (where I might go back sometime in the near future) where the emissions rules are stricter. I did notice the Tier 2 Bin 5 / LEV2 rating under the hood of the Tribeca I saw at my local dealer in PA. I wonder if the ones sold in CA have the same ratings.

Another question I had was whether the Tribeca had a height-adjustable driver seat atleast since I'm on the shorter side. My Honda Accord EX has one and I'm very used to this feature.

Would appreciate any help on the the above questions.

I would also like to congratulate all the current Tribeca owners for their new cars and also would like to thank everybody in this forum for the informative posts.

Kim in PA.
