Dealer's "don't" tell you how they make money, ie incentives for volume and others that make then a nice sum for any vehicle they sell. The desitantion charge is a "real" "charge" that the dealer has to pay to have the vehicle delivered to his location. Like everything, it can be negotiated to the degree that when you walk out the door the dealer has made enough to make it worth his while.

I had an interesting experience. I learned before hand that you can purchase an extended warantee anytime before your original is completely done. The cost of the extended warantee was quoted at 1800.00 i believe. I had already plunked down a good chunk of change on the down payment, wanted to keep monthly to a minimum. To the manager i would wait on the extended warantee. We continued on with the transaction then what do you know, he said "well let me take another look at that warantee, what is my cost" he showed me he cost was 1100.00 (which again I new was BS) but looks good on a 8x10 "glossy". He offered the warantee for 1200.00. I took out my check book, wrote a separate check for a grand 1,100.00 and handed it over. To my suprise, he took it. added the warantee, 7 years 100k miles and that was that. I went from 1800.00 to 1,100 in 5 minutes and added the warantee. is there room to deal, when you don't give a darn, well yes. As I said, I wanted the warantee for above stated reasons.   Getch

Acura will probably offer big deals in the months ahead. Sales of the RL for March are the lowest among all the luxury performance cars, including those from Lexus Infiniti, BMW, Mercedes, even, I believe, Audi. The car is obviously overpriced and underselling. Bargain up (and not far up) from invoice. The days of sticker price for this car are over. Plus, as we all know, it's $15,000 more than the TL.

I would just like to know what you people do in order to be able to afford to buy this car? I work like a dog and I cannot figure out how to make enough money to afford the monthly payment whether leasing or buying it!!! How can you afford it? They want 600 a month. At the auto show, there were huge crowds around the Infiniti M models, with people waiting to get into the cars. But at the Acura display, the RL was practically ignored. When I was there, I don't think I saw more than a couple of people looking at it at any one time. For a brand new, flagship model, that has got to be alarming for Acura.   When I was talking to one of the Acura reps at the show, I started to comment on the price, and he literally finished the sentence for me by agreeing that the car is expensive. Then he proceeded to attempt to justify the price by saying something like the RL is a "lifestyle" car. I had no idea where he was going with that. But he seemed like a sincere enough guy. I enjoyed talking to him, and I just think he, and all the other sales reps, are facing a tough job selling the RL.

Replying to: dib (Mar 31, 2005 12:51 am) I got a firm quote from Mike Harvey Acura Dealership in Burlingame, CA at $45K even. It basically represents 3% above the invoice cost. I, however, turned it down and told them I would wait for another month or two. I have a good feeling the price will continue to drop fast as they are not selling anywhere close to what they initially thought they could. Furthermore, with the launch of new Lexus GS, BMW 530xi, Infiniti M, etc., intense competition works to the buyer's benefits. I remember those days when Acura CL Type-S models were sold below invoice cost (yes, below invoice cost). My guts tell me it may well happen to their RL model sooner or later. Don't you feel guilty to get such a deal as they still make profits from getting marketing co-op money from Acura.

For me, it has taken 25 years or so of that hard work to get to a point where I feel like I can treat myself to the RL and I make pretty good money. I bought my last new car 5 years ago and I've been saving that $600 a month since then so I was able to write a check for this one (after selling the old one). That's a luxury that I really enjoy right now but it is a recent thing. Five years ago a $30K car made me gulp.   I think that the comment about cars in this class being "lifestyle" cars is pretty apt. You have to really value a car to buy something in the RL's class. I don't take offense at the "lifestyle" description. And, yes, it is a real treat to be able to even be considering buying a beautiful machine like an RL and comparing it with the likes of Mercedes, Infiniti, BMW, Audi, etc.   On the other hand, as someone who ( I believe ) is smart with money, I'd prefer to have the same lifestyle and save some money. The RL is overpriced at 49K. It's a reasonable buy at 44 to 45 K. There's no reason why we should have to lease these cars at $700 to $900 per month when, they should be in the range of $500 to $600.   It's my life style I care about. Not my dealer's.   Just my two cents. Hang in there. I believe that prices are on the way down.   MikeJ.
