..."I have no idea what they mean"...

You are probably one of the INXS of 98% that chose the 2 x to 6x dirtier fuel?

RUG to PUG 30 ppm sulfur

D2 15ppm to 5 ppm sulfur

What does the mathematics tell you? Yet INXS of 98% chose the 2 x to 6 x dirtier fuel......

It seems some people like to act a little superior on this thread and forget that it is for everyone....not just diesel junkies.

I'll give a shot at deciphering for you.

Reg Unleaded Gas(RUG) and Premium Unleaded Gas(PUG) put out about 30 parts per million of sulphur polutant

The new clean Diesel(D2) puts out from about 15 parts per million to 5 parts per million.

I have no idea what "INXS" means but I think he is indicating that 98% of people still buy a gas vehicle which puts out between 2 and 6 times the sulphur polutants than the new clean diesel fuel does.

From everything I've read the new diesel doesn't smell much but I have noticed a tinge of soot around the exhaust pipes of new Jetta TDIs I have been behind on the road.

Okay, Great! Thank you for helping me with that. It makes sense.

I am really considering the car.

With it being a diesel engine, the torque seems like its pretty strong. Stronger than the regular 2.0T? That would be fun! Worth it.

Superior? No it is just the information has been repeated any exponential number of times and it seems the only ones who seem to "get it" ARE your words "diesel junkies". The residual in the overwhelming number of cases seems to be continuing dis belief.

So it is refreshing to see that "other than" folks seem to at least understand it. However that understanding seemingly hasn't done much to motivate many to ...try/switch.

There would be more new diesel owners, at least from those who visit Edmunds.com, if historical posters would be more helpful to novices, rather than condescending. A little help in a good faith manner goes a long way.

Personally, I know of quite a few people considering diesels for the first time. For one who's spent quite a bit of time in Europe, this is a good thing.

Let's see, I ask a question, which gets no answer. Then I tell you the answer. Then I tell you the statistics. Does the truth seem condescending?

The 2009 TDI is 140 hp and 236 # ft of torque. The EPAs are 30/41/34 and29/40/33 mpg. The 2009 2.0T (turbo) is 200 hp and 207# ft of torque. So yes app 14% more torque than the 2.0 T. The EPA's are 22/29/25 mpg. I also believe PUG is required.

Sometimes it can be depending on how you say it.
