24,700 sounds like a bit above MSRP. of ~ 24,138...Edmunds recommends working up from Invoice an dnot even down from MSRP. That's how I got my deal.

22,500 would be more like it or 22, 250...

opinions on prices by danmac

seeking an opinion or two about an offer from local VW dealer on a Jetta TDI:

details:
Jetta TDI Sedan
Graphite Blue
17" Sport Wheels
Sunroof
Manual

Dealer offered to sell it for 23,400 + Fees. TMV puts this package at approx 24,513 and the MSRP is 25,320, invoice is 23,762.

Love this car but know that nothing is selling. He essentially laughed me off the phone (this was an internet offer) when I made a lower counter offer. I felt that this was part of his game as he was trying to get me to buy that day and not wait a week or whatever.

Any rumors on March VW Specials, APRs, discounts, etcetera.

Cheers.

Essentially from his point of view, how serious are you? He is just prequalifying an inquiry. If you are, let us know if you get a below invoice price !!!

That is correct. Evidently you didn't tug convincingly enough on his chain.

at least i learned that the new TDI uses a timing chain, instead of a belt.

either that or his chain was too tight! i tugged pretty hard, but once the dealer says, this is my best offer, you gotta either buy it or stand up and walk away, right?

"at least i learned that the new TDI uses a timing chain, instead of a belt."

This is 100% wrong. I have seen the belt and the TDI uses a belt, not a chain. The 2.5L engine uses a chain. This link also confirms this info like reviews and maintenance on the 2009 TDI Jetta:

A fair price for a 2009 Jetta TDI is invoice. Some are going below invoice. No one should be at above MSRP AT ALL. If they do then don't give them your business.

? I am under the impression by several posters on www.tdiclub.com the 2009 REMAINS a BELT, albeit made by Continental to last a "lifetime" aka 150,000 miles...... But the TB/WP change interval is now at 120,000 miles. At this time none of the vendors are offering TB/WP kits.

And yes, they all have overt and subtle ways of telling you yes/no/maybe/humor me, etc. If I am not perceiving the signals correctly, then I usually ask something along these lines. Do you want to sell THIS car, to ME, for X PRICE, TODAY? If they are still in the mood, what issues are getting in YOUR way?

belt or chain by danmac

looks like belt it is. two dealers told me it had a chain. crazy!

i think i just convinced myself i'm going to buy one anyway, been toying between tdi and civic. civic is just too small for me; i'm 6'4".

now i just gotta pull the trigger on a good deal. my bargain shopper instinct says to wait it out and i'll find one at a price i can live with. my target is 22,500 with 17" sport avignon wheels, sunroof, manual. wish me luck! i'll post when i get it, most likely after the 1st.
