Just paid list price at Colonial VW in Trevose PA. Just across the river northern philly suburb. Was on the list since August...wagon came in in the colors I wanted, but with the sunroof. Oh well...

2500 above MSRP? In this economy? Was in and out in 2 hours, they took my Caddy Seville in trade.

200 miles on it since yesterday when I picked up. With cruise control on, on the NJ turnpike between exit 9 and 7A...was returning a constant 50 MPG at 65/70 MPH.

Oh, yeah, the dealer delivered with a full tank. I have just a little under 3/4 right now.

You can do better.

bryanav8r please keep us posted on your MPG with your Sportwagon. It would be great to know your actual MPG after you have gone through 3-4 tanks of gas and 2000+ miles.

Will do. Right now, at 500 miles (I'm driving it and loving it more and more...) combined town and highway (according to the readout on the display) my average is 40.2. I'm serious, too.

I'm thinking (and this is based on keeping numbers from engines that I've rebuilt, mostly brit cars...I know it bears no relation to this technology, but, it's what I have to go on...) that as it breaks in (and I'm not doing anything special other than heeding the suggestions in the Owner's Manual) I'm going to return somewhere around 5% better mileage once all the parts have bedded in. That means a combined figure around 42-43 mpg I guestimating. Hey, 40 combined is nothing to sneeze at if I don't get the extra 2 or 3 mpg on full break in, right?

Taking a trip to Fredericksburg VA this weekend from the northern Philly area. That will give it a good chance to come up to full stable temps (my commute is only a half hour) and a long interstate cruise.

And the heated seats are nice. I think VW, just based on my experiences so far, has a winner here. It's a shame more folks hold their nose at the mention of 'Diesel'. This car is quieter than my SO's Pontiac G6 at idle, smoother at idle than my 98 seville (you have to look at the tach to see if it's running...I'm serious...), and is torquey enough to squirt yourself onto the superslab from the entrance ramp.

If you haven't test driven one, go for it. No financial interest, etc. Just a happy camper (so far...).

Jetta TDI Sportwagon, Bay Area pricing? by johnrbrooks

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area looking for an 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagon, 6 spd auto/Tip, lazer blue or red salsa, anthracite leatherette, 17" wheels, body molding/accents, sunroof, nav, IPod. I'm getting the same feedback regarding scarcity and up to $5k over MSRP. Intuitively that just sticks in my craw considering the state of the car market, regardless of how popular these cars are. Have not tried internet. Thoughts? Also what is the "Loyalty" edition, and does the TDI Sportwagon have steering wheel controls or not. VW brochure seems to say yes, internet no, and I read here that someone bought one w controls. I'm getting conflicting info.

We purchased a 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI from a Garden Grove, CA dealer on Oct. 28th for MSRP. They were asking $2000 over MSRP, but we refused to pay it and they sold it to us for MSRP. It was the only Sportwagen TDI they had.

The Jetta TDI Sportwagen we bought Oct. 28th does not have steering wheel controls, but who needs them. You can reach everything without leaning forward.
Great layout of all controls.

I agree. I have them on my Sequoia steering wheel, and still reach for the volume on the dash. Just something else to go bad with age.

I don't think at this time you will be able to get a TDI at invoice or close to invoice. Plus the mark up from invoice to MSRP is only around $1,100. Paying over MSRP in any US market is wrong. MSRP on a TDi right now is the market. You can wait for the TDI market to soften. Keep in mind there is a allocation supply problem to supply the local dealerships across the country with TDI's. You might have to wait for some time. There is a dealership in SO Cal with a good stock of around 20 some TDI's, but no TDI sportwagens - sorry. Enjoy your new TDI!
