how best to fix turn signal glitch by jmblodgett
Sep 17, 2004 (7:31 pm)
I just bought a 1986 Honda Civic 4wd Wagon. The left hand turn signal clicks much faster than the right, which clicks at what I would call a normal speed. Plus, the front left turn signal and side marker lights do not work.

1) Is there an easy way to fix the signal speed glitch?
2) How best should I approach the lights that do not work? I tried new bulbs to no avail.

Feel free to reply to me privately. Thank you.

Congrats! I just bought an 86 Honda Civic 2wd Wagon - the 1500 DX! I finally have a compadre in this adventure! I'd be more than happy to email you regarding other things going on with the car.

Usually when a turn signal starts blinking faster, it's an indication that the bulb is about to blow. In fact, by the time you read this, you may have already learned that. If new bulbs didn't do the trick on the other lights, are you sure you have the right bulbs and have you checked the fuse? You should find your fuse box located near your hood release lever, just to the left and down from the steering wheel in the cabin. Look for the fuse that corresponds to "turn signal" and such.

HOpe the helps.

Like Elissa said, the rapid blinking of the turn signal is the built in indication that one or more bulbs are burnt. The rapid blinking is usually remedied by replacing the burnt bulb. I doubt you got the owner's manual with an '86, but you never know. I got an owners manual and all the receipts when I bought an '85 Civic 10 years ago from an original owner.
Anyway, it would not hurt to invest $10-$20 into a Haynes manual, or Chilton at the worst. Helms is the best, but you may not be willing to spend $70 on a car manual. Check out ebay as well.

Ditto to what bluied said. I have the Helms manual - it's great. I find the Chilton and Haynes manuals to be wrought with errors for my 86 Civic applications. The Honda shop manual seems not to be. I got it for $9 on eBay and that owner had gotten it from a dealer for $28 (original receipt included).

Okay, since this question seems to have been covered, I'm going to close this forum and direct any further questions to the "Electrical Gremlins" forum, which you can find by using our search feature to the left of this page.

thank you
