You're right. I've been looking for ABS too. I do have the brochure and it says that ABS is an option...but I think it's crummy that with the power package on the sedan it comes with it but not on the liftback. Why are they making you pay more for every little thing on the liftback? It doesn't make sense to me. I love the looks of the Yaris Liftback...but I'm going to be leaning towards the Hyundai Accent Hatchback if the MPG is decent...at least ABS and side curtains are standard on the SE model. Toyotas are reliable cars...but with this car being so small they sure haven't thought about safety...slam on the brakes on this baby at 75mph and I think there might be a problem maintaining control.

I've had my ABS activate several times. In the DC area where driving can be intense (as I'm sure it is everywhere) and there are many aggressive drivers I have had countless times of going full speed and someone decides to get right in front of me while somebody gets right in front of them and I've had to slam on my brakes because nobody is going speed...I've also had instances where someone is going from a dead stop from the shoulder going right in front of me...had to slam on my brakes and go on the shoulder myself so I wouldn't hit them. In the snow it gives a lot more control. With my non-ABS car I would go to stop and would lose a little control...with ABS it is pretty much impossible. It kicks in all the time with the ice we have here during the winter.

As much as I love the Yaris...I don't want to be more susceptible to having an accident because it lacks decent safety features. I drive about 25,000 miles a year at least so I have lots of opportunities for accidents to happen....especially when more and more people aren't paying attention.

ABS is available for Yaris hatch. However, ABS comes bundled with convenience, power and cold weather packages (at least in Philadelphia area). Haven't seen it alone, although I would also buy it with ABS and air bags as the only options. After all, what's wrong with Toyota's packaging department? You can't get the car packaged only with what should matter the most for small cars - safety features!!! Somehow the public is being convinced that convenience and power are more important?!?!

Thats a lot of driving. I am fortunate that even though I live in NJ, I work second shift so the rapidly increasing traffic congestion doesnt affect me. The highways ARE getting overcrowded. I rode my motorcycle one day from Tupelo Missisippi to Zanesville Ohio on the freeway. I must have passed 100,000 tractor trailers. It seemed there was a continuous line of them.
I drove a VW beetle in the 70s and 80s commuting 60 miles to and from work each date in upstate NY, in lake effect snow during the winter. No ABS not even disc brakes. Unbelievablely bad steering control. (excellent traction however) Never had an accident. Ill trust my brain anyday over some gadget. You have a point though there are a lot of morons out there.

we begin to see some Yaris liftbacks built with the optional ABS. ABS and side airbags/curtains are stand-alone options on the liftback - not in any package - so it may be necessary to order a car to get it with the ABS and bags, at least initially.

Toyota has sent mixed messages on ABS in recent years - it has been standard on all the Camrys for a long time, yet it is very rare to find a Corolla built with ABS, even the ones that have the side airbags/curtains package. It is standard on the very cheap $15K base model Tacoma truck, yet on Toyota cars at the same price point, it is impossible to find? That sucks.

And then of course, Toyota is TOTALLY treating the liftback as the red-headed stepchild of the Yaris line. The only liftbacks available on Toyota's "build your own" in my area are base models and those with the convenience package and nothing else. Not that build your own is the definitive predictor of what will be out there, but it doesn't bode well. The liftbacks get shorted options, which I don't like. The power package in the sedan includes cruise control, in the liftback it doesn't, despite using the same powertrain.

All manual-equipped sedans get a tach, but liftbacks don't - why is that? And I'm still not quite over my surprise that in the year 2006 the only way to an $11K base price for the liftback is through deleting the rear defroster and radio - sheesh! Yet all cars get four stereo speakers - that seems silly if you are selling the car without a radio. Put the defroster and wiper back in the base car, and remove the speakers for goodness' sake. Someone who wants to buy their own stereo will want their own speakers too, which are bound to be better than the stock speakers in an $11K car.

I know that ABS is theoretically a stand alone option. However in my region the build-my-toyota site offers only two option combinations (try zip code 19020). The one that has ABS also has power, convenience, cold weather packages, keyless entry, etc. None of the combinations have side air bags. I am checking 10 local dealers and all they have in stock are just these two combinations. I know I could make a custom order, but I hear it takes 3 to 5 months to get it from Japan. The point is, if I want any safety options, I either have to pay $1600 for the options I don't want or wait unreasonably long to get them. And this is not how it should be, since at $14000+ the manual Yaris hatchback is no longer a good deal. I tried hard to get it, but now I am leaning towards Honda Fit which you can get for virtually the same price and ABS & side air bags come standard.

I've got the Yaris brochure from a local dealership and it says that ABS is included with the power package for the sedan... but a stand alone for the lift... Is the brochure messed up?

No, it's correct. ABS is stand-alone in the liftback. And the side airbags are a stand-alone option in all body styles and trims, so you can expect to find pretty much ZERO Yarii out there equipped with those...

Theoretically, you should be able to build a Yaris liftback manual with convenience package, ABS, and side airbags, for about $13K sticker, or a little less even. There is no chance such a car will be produced and ordered for dealer stock anywhere near where I live, maybe anywhere in the U.S.

Maybe I will have to go ask my nearest dealer about ordering procedures....I don't think they are going to be thrilled with me, however.

Yes that is what the Toyota Austria web site stated
the Yaris used 6.1L for a 100KM ride while the Corolla
used 7.5L for a 100KM ride. Rather than directly convert
the number to MPG look at the ratios, the Yaris gets
22% better fuel economy over the Corolla. Contrast this
to the US Toyota web site which has both cars at about the
same MPG.

This just show the variation in results based on test methods and perhap the Yaris actually get 20% better MPG
over the Corolla.
