I have put 14,000 km on it since December; use it in driver-training and deliveries and even took it on the local race track (not an oval). It/I wasn't embarrassed in the corners, even running in a training session with Porsches and racing BMWs, as it has special rigid steel which also keeps the car extraordinarily quiet. One British writer called it a mini-Lexus. I like the look of it (red in color) and it is very easy to drive - perhaps the easiest car to drive I have ever driven - although if you make driving errors, it will transmit them very directly. Small cars, small airplanes, and small boats share this feature, so driving smoothly requires a good touch at the wheel. Our other car is a Saab 9-3, which feels like a tank (and accelerates like a rocket) by comparison. Another family member drives a 2.5 liter Subaru so each of our cars has very enjoyable driving features and each is quite interesting and enjoyable in its own way. Variety is the spice of life. The first Yaris change I made was going with the world's best all-season tires - the Nokian WR - and I don't regret that move a bit. The Subby also has 'em. |

Hey, all. VERY interested in getting a Yaris soon. Question: When I configure my Yaris, I can easily get ABS on the sedan, but don't see it on any option package for the hatch. My requirements for next car are small, hatch, manual, ABS. I can't imagine in 2006 someone skimping to save a few bucks on ABS and buying a non-ABS new car. I've been to several driving schools and events, and it is of obvious value to 99% of drivers. Anyway, seeing that this kind of thing is standard/optional on, say, a Scion xA or Honda Fit or Hyundai Accent, I can't believe it is not at least optional on a Yaris hatch. What a buzzkill. Anyone know if you can special order a Yaris hatch with ABS? If I'm going to be driving this car for 4-5 years, I can't see skipping it. Thanks.

| ABS has not caused any significant reduction in the accident rate. In fact, it is possible it is causing drivers to drive MORE agressively because they believe the car itself will keep them out of accidents. The same for skid control devices. Personally, in thirty years of driving I can only recall one instance where ABS would have been nice to have. As it was, because I was driving defensively, I didnt have an accident in spite of no ABS. If your ABS is activated, it probably means you were driving carelessly. | |

Replying to: kneisl1 (Apr 26, 2006 5:02 am) As much as I love the Yaris...I don't want to be more susceptible to having an accident because it lacks decent safety features. I drive about 25,000 miles a year at least so I have lots of opportunities for accidents to happen....especially when more and more people aren't paying attention. |

| ABS is available for Yaris hatch. However, ABS comes bundled with convenience, power and cold weather packages (at least in Philadelphia area). Haven't seen it alone, although I would also buy it with ABS and air bags as the only options. After all, what's wrong with Toyota's packaging department? You can't get the car packaged only with what should matter the most for small cars - safety features!!! Somehow the public is being convinced that convenience and power are more important?!?! | |

Thats a lot of driving. I am fortunate that even though I live in NJ, I work second shift so the rapidly increasing traffic congestion doesnt affect me. The highways ARE getting overcrowded. I rode my motorcycle one day from Tupelo Missisippi to Zanesville Ohio on the freeway. I must have passed 100,000 tractor trailers. It seemed there was a continuous line of them. I drove a VW beetle in the 70s and 80s commuting 60 miles to and from work each date in upstate NY, in lake effect snow during the winter. No ABS not even disc brakes. Unbelievablely bad steering control. (excellent traction however) Never had an accident. Ill trust my brain anyday over some gadget. You have a point though there are a lot of morons out there. |

we begin to see some Yaris liftbacks built with the optional ABS. ABS and side airbags/curtains are stand-alone options on the liftback - not in any package - so it may be necessary to order a car to get it with the ABS and bags, at least initially. Toyota has sent mixed messages on ABS in recent years - it has been standard on all the Camrys for a long time, yet it is very rare to find a Corolla built with ABS, even the ones that have the side airbags/curtains package. It is standard on the very cheap $15K base model Tacoma truck, yet on Toyota cars at the same price point, it is impossible to find? That sucks. And then of course, Toyota is TOTALLY treating the liftback as the red-headed stepchild of the Yaris line. The only liftbacks available on Toyota's "build your own" in my area are base models and those with the convenience package and nothing else. Not that build your own is the definitive predictor of what will be out there, but it doesn't bode well. The liftbacks get shorted options, which I don't like. The power package in the sedan includes cruise control, in the liftback it doesn't, despite using the same powertrain. All manual-equipped sedans get a tach, but liftbacks don't - why is that? And I'm still not quite over my surprise that in the year 2006 the only way to an $11K base price for the liftback is through deleting the rear defroster and radio - sheesh! Yet all cars get four stereo speakers - that seems silly if you are selling the car without a radio. Put the defroster and wiper back in the base car, and remove the speakers for goodness' sake. Someone who wants to buy their own stereo will want their own speakers too, which are bound to be better than the stock speakers in an $11K car. |

I know that ABS is theoretically a stand alone option. However in my region the build-my-toyota site offers only two option combinations (try zip code 19020). The one that has ABS also has power, convenience, cold weather packages, keyless entry, etc. None of the combinations have side air bags. I am checking 10 local dealers and all they have in stock are just these two combinations. I know I could make a custom order, but I hear it takes 3 to 5 months to get it from Japan. The point is, if I want any safety options, I either have to pay $1600 for the options I don't want or wait unreasonably long to get them. And this is not how it should be, since at $14000+ the manual Yaris hatchback is no longer a good deal. I tried hard to get it, but now I am leaning towards Honda Fit which you can get for virtually the same price and ABS & side air bags come standard.
