I think you need to go pick up a new CR and see how many Kia / Hyundai models they recommend now with ratings well above average. But leaving CS out and I am speaking of just the minivan from 06 up after the redesign go over and look at the edmunds forum. Look at the problems people are having with them. Very minor stuff almost always covered under warranty. You can also tow up to 3,500 lbs with trailer brakes on the new Korean van. I am giving you my opinion about the vans quality and Edmunds user rating of the van is very high. I own one and am am very happy with it. Kia's are not dropping tranny's like no tomorrow, they have a timing chain with NO scheduled replacement interval, very good powerful 3.8 250/253 engine, many standard features such as esc, abs, tpms, de-icer all standard. I'm not going to argue and turn this into prove it blah blah blah. This again is my opinion and personal experience. We have two Honda's in the family, not the Ody, and both are good cars but have cost way to much $$$ for standard maintenance, both have had minor problems not covered under the standard warranty. The Koreans are trying very hard to gain market share right now and their quality has drasticly improved. Anyway, I hope my input helps.

I came close to buying a Kia Sedona, a bargain at under $20k for a base model, so I've followed the threads for those vans. Lots of complaints of excessive tire wear and alignment/vibration problems. Many owners are perfectly happy, but there is definitely a pattern of suspension problems creating vibrations issues for people, even some that have tried 3 sets of tires. Are you and I really reading the same threads? This is all right here on Edmunds, documented in more than one thread. |

I like this guy because he gets the VIN and collects regular updates from owners, so the data comes out much sooner than CR or anyone else. Any how, the Entourage scores middle-of-the-road at best, the 2007 model has more than twice as many problems as the same year Ody or same year Toyota. Sienna is consistently excellent. Ody has done well lately, but older models score below the Entourage, pre-2004 transmission upgrade mostly. http://www.truedelta.com/car-reliability.php (you have to register, but it's free and a good source of info) |

| The number of complaints in the Kia / Hyundai forum fall drastically short of the complaints in the Ody side. Sure there are problems with the new Kia van, none that I have experienced but again I am speaking from personal experience. I think they are making a very good product now and am very happy with my purchase. Most of the minor problems Kia had was typical of a redesign and fixed after the first production year. Yes we are reading the same post, I answer and help many people with Sedona's. Kia & Hyundai are making a very good product now. For those who are interested in a new vehicle I do recomend their vans. Funny that edmunds users rate the 08 Ody at 7.8 and the Sedona at 9.2 I believe. | |

Replying to: ateixeira (Mar 10, 2009 12:02 pm) The aforementioned "reliability" problems you are mentioning are very minute compared to huge transmissions problems. The problems Kia has struggle with are mainly electrical and the fact that their is a 60,000 bumper to bumper and 100,000 power train warranty means most likely you will be covered. In all honesty I would much rather have a van with minor electrical gremlins then one loosing transmissions. Honda not fixing this problem year after year shows a lot how they feel about their customers. It took a law suit for certain years to be covered and it is usually a huge hassle for existing owners to have Honda only cover some of the cost for replacing the tranny. I don't know what you would choose but I would certainly pick a van that I would not have to spend upwards of four thousand dollars per transmission then taking your van into the dealer for warranty repair. Nonetheless, I would not have purchased a pre 06 Sedona. I think their gain in market share speaks for itself. I hope you get what I am saying. Again, the problems Kia had and may still have to some degree are not powertrain. This speaks in many ways to the true reliability of the vehicle. This is why many of these survey sites and to a degree CS miss the mark. They praise a van because of initial quality but what happens to all those poor owners who lost the second most expensive part in the car out of warranty. Often multiple times! I know Honda has lost countless customers because of this. No thanks, I'll take my factory warranty and deal with the minor problems if they arise...

Replying to: lavrishevo (Mar 10, 2009 9:20 am) The user ratings are helpful, but also subjective. Self sampling surveys are always biased by expectations. If someone has low expectations that are satisfied and exceeded, they will rate highly; if the expectations are high and unmet then they will rate lowly. Even though an item may be better in every way by objective criteria, the expectation criteria can make for lower ratings.
