We bought a 2000 Honda Odyssey EX with 3K miles on it in June 2000 from a Honda Dealer. At the time, it was a total seller's market for the Odyssey, they were being built at only one factory as I recall, in Canada, in fairly small numbers and supply was tight. I pains me to say it but I think we paid almost sticker price for the thing, even with 3K on it already. We just had to have it, it was a HONDA after all, it was the hottest thing going in mini-vans at the time and the 2000 Sienna (1st generation) was . . . how do I put it . . . UGLY.

We have been generally disappointed by our 2000 Ody. We have had the transmission replaced twice: the first time at 86K miles (which Honda covered) and most recently last week at 130K miles (Honda put up 1K we paid the remaining $2,400). Each of the power sliding doors has been repaired AT LEAST four times. The engine mounts have all been replaced twice and the catalytic converter had to be replaced.

We are fed up with the transmission problems and are looking for another mini-van (NEW). I think the Sienna XLE FWD is the way to go, although I am confident that Honda has improved the Ody's quality since the 2000 model. I am interested in receiving any feedback you might have.

1983gti Tell me that you are not considering encouraging Honda again ??

Go with Toyota they are not perfect either but they are more reliable

The new Hyundai and Kia are even more reliable and have higher customer reviews then the Ody. I purchased the new Sedona almost 3 years ago and have been very happy with it. No problems whatsoever and 100k warranty. Heck if your willing to buy very slightly used you can save 50% - 70% over the price of a new Ody or Toyota! Good luck Toyota and the Koreans are making the best van out there right now. As an example my brother picked up an 08 Sedona LX dealer exec never titled with 7,500 miles and 100k warranty for $12,500. Don't know how you can beat that!

The Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona have the lowest possible reliability rating from Consumer Reports, "Well below Average."

What information do you have about the Sedona/Entourage that says they are more reliable than the Odyssey?

I too have the same question, where did you see the Kia/Hyundai vans were more reliable then the Odyssey. I have seen a newer Entourage on the side of the road, and the driver was not happy and had the hood up. Anyways I don't think they build the best vans, maybe the most value available because of price but I still would get a Honda or Toyota. We are on our 2nd Sienna and just love them. 0 problems. 95,000 miles on our 04 Limited AWD and already have 37,000 on our 07 XLE FWD.

I would still probably take a chance with the Korean vans over the Chrysler van's though.

I think you need to go pick up a new CR and see how many Kia / Hyundai models they recommend now with ratings well above average. But leaving CS out and I am speaking of just the minivan from 06 up after the redesign go over and look at the edmunds forum. Look at the problems people are having with them. Very minor stuff almost always covered under warranty. You can also tow up to 3,500 lbs with trailer brakes on the new Korean van. I am giving you my opinion about the vans quality and Edmunds user rating of the van is very high. I own one and am am very happy with it. Kia's are not dropping tranny's like no tomorrow, they have a timing chain with NO scheduled replacement interval, very good powerful 3.8 250/253 engine, many standard features such as esc, abs, tpms, de-icer all standard. I'm not going to argue and turn this into prove it blah blah blah. This again is my opinion and personal experience. We have two Honda's in the family, not the Ody, and both are good cars but have cost way to much $$$ for standard maintenance, both have had minor problems not covered under the standard warranty. The Koreans are trying very hard to gain market share right now and their quality has drasticly improved. Anyway, I hope my input helps.

Other models are, but not the minivans. A critical difference.

The minivans score poorly in CR. I don't see how you can mention CR as a source when they recommend you avoid those vans.

I came close to buying a Kia Sedona, a bargain at under $20k for a base model, so I've followed the threads for those vans. Lots of complaints of excessive tire wear and alignment/vibration problems.

Many owners are perfectly happy, but there is definitely a pattern of suspension problems creating vibrations issues for people, even some that have tried 3 sets of tires.

Are you and I really reading the same threads? This is all right here on Edmunds, documented in more than one thread.

I like this guy because he gets the VIN and collects regular updates from owners, so the data comes out much sooner than CR or anyone else.

Any how, the Entourage scores middle-of-the-road at best, the 2007 model has more than twice as many problems as the same year Ody or same year Toyota.

Sienna is consistently excellent.

Ody has done well lately, but older models score below the Entourage, pre-2004 transmission upgrade mostly.

The number of complaints in the Kia / Hyundai forum fall drastically short of the complaints in the Ody side. Sure there are problems with the new Kia van, none that I have experienced but again I am speaking from personal experience. I think they are making a very good product now and am very happy with my purchase. Most of the minor problems Kia had was typical of a redesign and fixed after the first production year. Yes we are reading the same post, I answer and help many people with Sedona's. Kia & Hyundai are making a very good product now. For those who are interested in a new vehicle I do recomend their vans. Funny that edmunds users rate the 08 Ody at 7.8 and the Sedona at 9.2 I believe.

I don't doubt you're having a good experience with yours at all, like I said many owners are happy. Two sources point to reliability not quite being there yet, though.

As for the Ody threads, well, there are many more Odys sold. Not to mention many more of them on the roads, and a lot of pre-2004 models sans the updated trans.
