I had not known about the heavier (heavy duty?) transmissions on the 2007 Odyssey's, I don't know if my budget will allow me to get that new of a Honda or not. Has the 05-06's had many transmission problems? I have read some, on the early Honda's were notorious for bad transmissions, and about the power steering pump seems to be another issue. I did read that the 2005 Toyota Sienna had better side impact resistance than the 2004 model and I would want at least a 2005 or newer, I got that from Wikipedia. I have read where some Sienna owners were getting some amazing MPG figures, not sure how they accomplish that, but it sure beats what I get in my Saturn Relay. As far as trade-in value goes, I think the longer I keep the Relay the worse it will be, so I only have 36,000 miles on it and the sooner I trade it in the better price I will get. Is there any thing I should be aware of on the Sienna's? What to look for on a used model? I'm still undecided between the two. I just test drove a Suzuki XL7 hoping it was big enough for my family and it wasn't, but I loved the way it drove and accellerated, but I could tell mileage would be worse. I also test drove a 08 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT and it wasn't bad either, but Dodge reliability is an issue, plus I think they quit giving the 5yr/60,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty. The Saturn has all the options and price, but I've hardly gone a month without it being in the shop. I don't even know if I can trust it on a long trip without breaking down.

I'm a Honda guy personally, as my two primary vehicles are both Accord sedans. I will tell you, however, that my great aunt has a 2005 Odyssey EX (cloth, non-VCM model) that has no problem getting 24-25mpg at 80 miles an hour, fully loaded with "stuff" from when we moved my parents from Oklahoma to Alabama. That being said, it has had a couple of "issues" but none that were "break-down" worthy. The windshield has a whistle at 50-60 MPH that the dealer never could fix, and an airbag sensor was recalled, which was no biggie - it got fixed at no charge.

There has been no powertrain problem to speak of, and is actually a delight to drive (like a bigger, heavier Accord) as opposed to the Toyota, which drives like a full-size truck with its numb steering. That being said, I'd try to find an '06 Honda, to avoid the "first-year bugs" if it turns out the Honda is what you really want.

By the way, I still love the remote-roll-down windows activated by the key fob on the Accord and Odyssey; something not everyone seems to know about. Talk about a lifesaver in the south on a summer day! Just roll em down on the way to the car; you can do the windows AND the doors on the Odyssey, and really cool the cabin.

I can say our 04 Sienna does not drive like a full size truck. It handles just as good as the Odyssey, especially with our Yokohama tires. I was went as fast and sometimes faster then Odyssey's on sharp mountain pass roads.

Having driven the Toyota and the Honda (both 05s, actually), the Honda had significantly more feel and feedback in the steering. It was as different as the current Camry LE and Accord EX. That's a big difference, to me.

Maybe it pulls the same raw numbers, but it wasn't nearly as confidence inspiring as the Honda Odyssey.

EDIT:

Car and Driver had this to say about the Sienna in 2007; it had the new 3.5L

If choosing a minivan came down to the powertrain, this Toyota would be a slam-dunk. The 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 is the strong, silent type, rushing to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, nearly a second ahead of the next-best Dodge. In fact, the Toyota earned top marks in every acceleration measure. And it does so with little more than a purr from beyond the fire wall.

Less satisfying are the generally aloof responses of the controls. The brakes feel wooden, and stops were long at 201 feet. The steering lacks sharpness. What you get instead of confident handling is a soft, quiet ride that makes the others seem a bit rude. One of our testers noted "butt burn" from the driver's seat, the result of a shape that forces a thin person's weight uncomfortably forward on the cushion.

And this about the Odyssey:

This Honda has all the competitors covered when it comes to driver confidence. It feels purposeful, motivated, even athletic in a way the others do not. The steering knows where straight ahead is, and carving away from that heading always feels precise. The Odyssey's driving position is one of the best in the business. The dash has large dials with bold markings. The column has tilting and telescoping adjustments. The driver's seat is easily the most comfortable of the group.

As the others' engines are upsized, the Odyssey's 244-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is feeling outgunned these days. Acceleration is about average for the group, handling grip and braking were somewhat better than average.

Odyssey EX-L:
.76g of Grip
48.3 MPH in the lane change

Sienna LE
.76g of Grip
47.0 MPH in the lane change

The 07 Odyssey got a 4 shaft transmission identical to their Ridgeline truck which has recorded few problems. The 99 to 04 Odysseys had a lot of problems which are pretty well documented on this site. To be fair the 05 to 06 models haven't seem to had many transmission problems, but it is a 3 shaft design which has to carry more load. Who knows what that will mean long term?

That's why I bought an 07 model and it's been a really good vehicle for me.

I wouldn't be afraid of the Dodge vans. You'll get a lot of van for your money in the 05 to 06 models.

It may have better steering feel but the Odyssey rode too rough for our taste and the road noise, like my uncle's 08 Accord EX-L, is horrible. He has thought of trading his Accord in for the Camry Hybrid. Honda's are good cars but they(to me and my family) ride too loud and rough.

As one poster said a long time ago; comparing the Odyssey to a Sienna is like comparing a Mercedes to a BMW. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm very leary of Dodge, although I did test drive a 08 and I was impressed. However, at that price I could get a nice Honda or Toyota. It took me 15 minutes just to figure where everything was before I even put it in gear. The dual DVD screens were also very nice, and the My Gig entertainment/Navigation touch screen. Too bad they are 30+ thousand for all that. I also noticed Dodge was giving a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty on them but not any more. The mileage is also nothing to write home about but the 4.0 liter motor was very peppy. I have read very good reviews from Dodge owners of the new 08's. I think they need more incentives before I really seriously consider one.

I had a brand new 76 Civic CVCC, and test drove it, then went to test drive a Toyota Corolla, it took me about 1 block to decide on the Honda. The Civic was like a pocket racer and the Toyota was like a...well...slug. Now the Sienna definitely isn't that bad compared to an Odyssey, but the difference is noticable. I do like the idea of being more of a drivers vehicle. Although I think the Sienna might have an edge on reliability. My g/f also liked the Honda better, she said it was like a glove and the Sienna wasn't that comfortable for her. She loved the Dodge too. Maybe a used 08 might be something worth looking into once the 09's come out. Then again there is that first year bugs to worry about with the 08. Whatever I decide I think if I can be patient and wait until September when the 09's come out I can get a great deal.

IF you want comfortable seats for EVERYONE in the minivan, get the Odyssey. The Odyssey EX also has separately controlled temperature for the driver and front passenger whereas the fine folks at Toyota think one temperature is fine for people do not want to pay at least $ 34,000 for a minivan.

The Odyssey also outperformed the Sienna until Toyota put the 3.5L in Siennas beginning with the 2007 model.

WE own a 2006 Sienna LE that gets great gas mileage and it has the largest storage area behind the 3rd row seat but the Sienna front passenger and middle row seats are NOT as comfortable as those in the Odyssey. There is NOT as much leg room for 3rd row passengers in the Sienna as there is in the Odyssey. Sienna's also do not have very good resale value.

CR ratings for the Ody dropped as the tranny failures occured. It makes sense, actually.
