Thanks that's helpful!

My choice is between a new 2007 and a high-mileage used 2006.

Price difference is probably around $10k, so I'm trying to make the tradeoffs on what I would get for the money.

Anything else?

Yes--it seems that you are having power steering pump noise. I had mine replaced about a year ago, and now the noise is starting up again. They should fix this at no charge for you, as it is a well known problem. If you live in Florida, you aren't going to be able to duplicate the problem, since it only occurs in colder weather. Something having to do with the fluid thickening with the cold, or so my dealer says. Hope this helps!

blown motor mount? by lance42

I have an intermitant vibration that occurs at any speed then the load is taken off the motor. The viberation can be overcome by speeding up. I know that the motor mounts are some kind of fluid filled. My question is to you the knowledgeable readers is: Does it sound as I have a blown motor mount?

2005 Odyssey Steering Problem by brundy

I am having issues with power steering at low speeds, such as parallel parking, etc. It is very hard to even turn the wheel at all some times. A Goodyear dealer told me that Honda is well aware of this issue as there have been lots of service bulletins out about it. Since my van only has 54,000 miles, but is out of warranty I am hoping that someone can tell me they have had some luck in getting Honda to eat the cost of repair. This same dealer said that it involves some sort of electronic issue in the steering and not the pump itself. I have checked the fluid level and it is fine so it has to be something else. It also makes that same grinding sound at low speed steering I have heard others complain about. I took it to a Honda dealer back 6 months ago and they said "no trouble found" which was not true. I am not going to be willing to fork over $700 to $800 on a new pump if Honda already knew about this. If need be, I'll go the small claims court route but I don't want the hassle of that if possible. Any suggestions? We live in Louisville so it is not a climate issue that is causing this either.

Thanks,
Brundy

My problem with the steering could only be duplicated when cold. Luckily, the last cold day of the year I finally got it to make the noise on the way to take it into the dealer. It took them less than a minute to say yep, you have a steering problem. I was both happy and frustrated as it took three trips to the dealer to get to this point and the first trip, I told them it was the steering but they couldn't duplicate it, so they wouldn't fix it. It hasn't been cold since, so I can only hope it is actually fixed. I guess I'll find out in December.

When I had my 99 transmission problem I also took it in at least three times (different dealer, in fact I switched because if this) and they claimed ignorance of a transmission problem, and unable to duplicate the problem. I finally, called the national Honda Corp Customer Service and they assigned me a problem number and sent me to a different dealer. All of a sudden, I was treated with respect and they were magically able to find the problem and covered it, even though it was out of warranty. So my recommendation would be to call Honda Corp Customer Service and see if you can get a problem number. This seemed to be magic when interacting with the dealer. I guess, it lets the dealer off the hook for any costs or responsibility.

With my 05 they replaced my rear motor mounts when I was complaining about the steering and vibration. I have seen the motor mounts crop up as a recurring problem as well, but the dealer came up with that fix on their own. I am frustrated with all the known problems that seem to take a ridiculous amount of effort on my part to get fixed. And it seems like I have had more than my share of problems with the Odyssey and I keep saying I won't do it again. But then I have to look at it and say that the company did stand behind their product (eventually) and I did get the problems taken care of all under warranty (even though I was just outside of the 36,000 miles). I'm not sure if other companies would do the same. Good luck.

I just took it in the dealer today and they are saying that its going to cost almost $600 to replace the pwr steering pump and resovoir!! I got to believe that Honda is well aware of this issue and I am really ticked off that nobody seems to want to do anything about it! Has anyone else had any luck getting Honda to pay for some of this cost? It would seem as though they should if it's an obvious defect.

How long has it been out of warranty? I have found Honda willing to bend over backwards to make a customer happy. Work with your service manager and ask him or her to ask Honda Corporate if they are willing to cover all or part of it under warranty. It's worked for me in the past, especially if you ask nicely and remind them you are thinking of buying Honda in the future.

08 Odyssey Oil Change by junghyun85

I have a quick question about oil change for 08 Odyssey.

From automobile shops such as Firestone and Jiffy Lube, I was often told
that regular oil's duration was 3 months / 3000 miles and
Synthetic was around 5000-6000 miles.

Can someone clarify on this information? On Odyssey's maintenance schedule, it didn't seem to really clarify how often I should do the oil change.
Lot of new car's manual seems to say every 5000 miles.
Is this assuming that I do synthetic oil change every time which costs a lot more? Or is it okay to go 5000 miles with regular oil.

Honda has a computer that calculates when to change based on temperature and driving. It will tell you when to change. My interval has been about 6,000 miles.

The old 3,000 oil change standard is a waste of money in my opinion. My last car I changed every 5,000 miles and put 170,000 on and it still didn't burn any oil.

You were exactly right!! When the dealer called me and told me how much it would cost to fix, I let him know that I was aware (as was Honda) that there have been a lot of issues with this same problem for lots of owners and that he should try and get Honda to work with me on this. Later that day, he called back with good news. Honda was picking up the tab for the whole thing!!! We just got back from driving on vacation of some 1,400 miles and I am happy to report that the steering is just fine now!!

Thanks for all of you who suggested that I contact the dealer for some help on this one. By the way, my Odyssey had 54,000 miles on it when I took it in for this problem.
