Replying to: carlisimo (Nov 21, 2004 8:51 pm) when equipped with the 2.0t, Jetta's competitors are more like the TSX, A4, S40 and 9-3 (but for less money, i hope).

Yeah I guess it's true, the Jetta's a half-step above most of the economy class. But Mazda's 3 is also pushing the upper envelope of economy cars, and with all the sub-economy cars coming out, more cars like the Civic and Cobalt will chase the Jetta upwards (but the midsized family cars aren't moving up at the same speed, which could make things interesting). And of all the companies to not sell a cheap car, it makes the least sense for VW to... not just because of their history, but because of Audi. VW doesn't seem to get a lot of power out of its engines, considering their size. Plenty of peak torque in this one, but not much more than other 2.3L or 2.4L engines out there. I'm guessing its peak torque is earlier in the rev range, then drops off, which would explain its low peak hp (either that or a silly 4800rpm redline). Really turns me off, but most drivers will love that. If they've solved their reliability issues, this could do alright, but I still think it's a tight niche to play. |

Can anyone please provide their thoughts as per the long term reliability of a turbocharged engine? I usually keep my cars 100,000 - 120,000 miles and am debating between the 5 cylinder and turbocharged 4. Thanks!

Replying to: mam262 (Nov 22, 2004 5:49 am) They do require slightly higher maintenance with frequent oil changes and/or higher grade of oil. Personally I wouldn't be concerned with the 100-120,000 range. On a side note...Abt already has 2.0T modifications, it takes the power to 230hp 230 ft/lb. |

When I saw the first official pictures of the 2006 VW Jetta the vehicle screamed Acura TSX as styled by Volkswagen. I'll take the real thing, thank you very much! However, I've heard that the new 2.5-liter I-5 engine will likely NOT stay at 150 bhp (SAE) after the first model year of the new car. With the USA completely switching to low-sulfur motor fuels by September 2006, this will allow VW to improve the engine using direct fuel injection with stratified combustion, which may up the horsepower to (probably) 165 bhp (SAE) and may cut fuel consumption by five percent compared to the initial production engine. I do know there is enormous potential to put in go-fast parts for the 2.5-liter I-5 engine without resorting to turbocharging, which might make it possible to up the power to as much as 200 bhp (SAE) easily! =) (After all, the engine is actually one-half of the engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo.) |

One of the many times my wife's bug was in the dealership getting repaired, I was given a turbo Jetta. Let me tell you, it was one of the worst driving cars you can imagine. The turbo lag made driving it sanely in the city almost impossible. You step on the gas and you wait...and wait...and wait then suddenly whooooossh. The car leaps forward with a huge power surge and almost rear ends the car in front of you. So you let off the gas and brake. This is repeated every time you step on the gas. It's almost like driving a car powered by a rubber band. combine that experience with the wonderful "jetta" quality. My first loaner car threw a clutch as I pulled out of the driveway. My second loaner Jetta lost a horn, all of the dash lights and the air bag sensor went out and kept telling us to buckle up even though we already were. On top of that the Jetta Turbo is number one on Consumer Reports "do not buy" list.
