I am pretty sure the new Civic 1.8l uses a timing chain (a sales person confirmed that for me). This is important to me because timing belts are a pain. Also, the sales guy told me that there is no real set oil change interval in the Civic but instead it has an oil "monitor" that will tell you when it is time to change the oil. Depending on how "sensitive" it is, I think it could be a good approach. Here in Canada the weather is brutal - freezing winters and summers that can get reasonably hot. In the winter It is probably wise to change every 5000km or so. But in less severe conditions, the oil is probably fine for 10000km or more. If this system reflects this (doubt it) then it would be better than simply changing every 8000km whether it is needed or not.

However, I am curious how hard the new Honda engine will be on oil. My 02 Accord 4cyl (2.3l VTEC) is great on oil and it never looks dirty. My wife's CR-V with the K24 2.4l i-VTEC seems to go through a little more oil and it always seems to be dirtier (same oil). Makes me think the i-VTEC engines are that much harder on the oil?

Security System Haywire in Our New Civic by jkrumm

My wife recently bought an 06 Civic LX manual sedan, and while we both like it (except that the emergency brake jabs me in the leg) recently some of the electronics went screwy. The alarm system started arming itself just by closing the driver's door and waiting a minute or so. Open the door (not using the remote key, just opening the unlocked door) and you get honk honk honk honk.... Also the key now will not open the passenger doors with the usual double button press.

It's all very strange. We took it to the dealer yesterday and the shop couldn't repeat the alarm problem, of course, but then it happened when a salesman was standing next to me, and later it happened for him. So they gave us a loaner car, and it's in the shop, two weeks after purchase. Has anyone heard of a problem like this?

Update, I now have 1050 miles on my EX Coupe. Love driving it. The new sport seats are very comfortable and the new dash is amazing. This best Honda to date. Yes, I'm that impressed with the auto. I've owned Integra's, CL, Accords and Civics. This is the best especially when you factor in the price and MPG. Wow, what the heck took so long? I haven't owned a European auto but there constant mechanical problems, high maintenance cost and high buying price just don't make sense. I'm not rich but I can afford up to a 535 series BMW. However, I just can't get passed the previous mentioned issues. Anyway, love the 06 Civic.
I do have two issues. What? Yes, the stereo sometimes skips. Its a night issue and I think it has something to do with vehicle power. Not sure if the stereo power supply is off the standard or the whole vehicle electrical system has an issue. Also, I get a rattle from the rear deck once the car cools down. The rattle is not present when the vehicle is in the sun and the interior has heated up. Anyone else have these issue?

We were getting the oil changed in our 04 Accord today and gave the Civic another try to see if my 6'6 husband could get comfy. He was mostly OK but the parking brake did jab him in the knee in both the sedan and coupe. Kinda stinks. The new Civic is a great looking car and we would probably consider the Si were he able to get comfortable.

Look to see where his foot rests on the gas pedal. On another forum site, some are having problems with the hand brake because they have their right foot on an extreme right angle ( Right toes on the pedal ) on the gas pedal instead on it being flat on, thus the right leg is rubbing against the hand brake.

I am 6-3" and have not had a problem with the hand brake at all and my knee is still around 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the brake.

All trims have coolant temperature gauges. You are referring to coolant temp are you not? Perhaps the dealer was referring to the outside temperature gauge which is only on EX trim.

I don't understand the 'inflated' HP claims about Honda but not Mazda. The Civic makes its 140hp at 6300 (500 rpm below the redline). The 2.3 in the 3 makes its 160hp at 6500, which is the redline of that engine. Likewise the Civic makes its 128 lb/ft at 4300 where the 150 lb/ft of the 3 is 4500, 200 rpm higher. In both cases, the Civic makes its peak power at a lower RPM than the Mazda does. The Civic is tested to new SAE standards, if anything the 3 might have inflated numbers, having been tested with older standards.

The Civic can cruise at a low rpm, it's just not going to have the power without a shift that the Mazda does. The Mazda has a 20 lb/ft and 20 hp advantage, as well as 500cc's more in displacement. Torque at 1500-3000 is most likely going to favor the 3. "No replacement for displacement". If you care more about power, then the 3 is your better choice. If you don't mind losing about 20hp and gaining about 1 second in 0-60 in exchange for an extra 5/7 mpg, than the Honda is the best choice. I believe the Civic can easily match the 2.0 in the 3i.

I too have been looking at both these vehicles for a while. It is a difficult choice. And referring to your dealer, I suggest looking for a different dealer. They seem to not be well trained in their product, and if you're sure they are ripping people off in maintenance, whats to say they aren't going to rip you off in other areas as well.

If you find some torque / hp curves for either engine, be sure to post it, I am interested in that too.
