With today's engines the odd run through the RPM range is not detrimental. The sales guys laughed - he said I was the first one to properly test drive the thing. The new 1.8l loves to rev, is very smooth, and between 4500-6500rpm there is lots of "geddie-up" in 3rd and 4th. I used to race motorcycles and break in was always a debated topic (especially when engines are rebuilt every few weeks). Yamaha techs said to not baby it and break in like you would normally ride. The only common advice was not to "lug" during break in too much, i.e., its better to rev more (though not at redline all the time) under lighter loads then to lug around at lower rpm. And of course vary engine speed (not too hard when racing). Obviously with an automatic you don't have much control over engine speeds.

Detroit News Panel Review of New Civic by micweb

The panel was a cross section of 8 Detroit area drivers. Most really like the car. A lot LIKED the digital, two level display, so the jury is out on that issue in my book. There was one strong complaint about the parking brake lever getting in the way, so I bet Honda will fiddle with it next year (no need to get ANY complaints on something that inconsequential, right?). There was concern that the interior was cramped, but most of the panel seemed to be driving trucks and suvs.

On the interior size issue, the Honda seems, to me, comparable to the Cobalt and old VW Jetta, but smaller than the Focus, new Jetta, and Corolla. I guess on that issue it will come down to personal choice - there doesn't seem to be any consensus among manufacturers, at least.

Why are you using 89? If it knocks on 87, take it to the dealer and have the car repaired.

I also own an '04 EX AT Civic sedan so appreciate the opportunity to compare impressions with you. At first was tempted to pay big premium to trade, probably mostly due to new-car-itis, but now am happy to stay with my still-new 15,000 mile '04. I was turned off when I learned that the '06 has 1.4 inches less rear legroom. I prefer the ride of the '04 over what I consider a bit too firm ride of the '06. Despite the EPA ratings, I believe gas mileage will not be as good with the '06 because it weighs 136 pounds more, and because you can't help but use more gas by using its 13 more horsepower. I really enjoy driving my '04 - off-the-line and braking smoothness, steering, everything, recognizing it doesn't have much horsepower (like compared to my '99 MT Z28).

My only complaint about the '04 is the front seats. I am 5-8 and am still playing with adjustments to be comfortable. The seat (squab I believe the British call it) is severely inclined which might be the reason, and there's no adjustment for that. I've found the best position all the way up and all the way back, with a fairly vertical seatback. Even then to be comfortable, it seems best if I don't press my hips all the way back in the seat. I must eventually get it right because I've taken two long overnight trips in the car. I don't seem to have this complaint in '03, '05, and '06 Civics I've sat in. Anyone else have a problem with the '04 seat?

The seats in the 04 are nothing short of horrendous (just my opinion there are folks that really like them). It isn't that they are inclined, it's that Honda decided to place a massive lumbar support that does not match up with anyones spine. The base of the seatback is excessively bostered but at a level that is too high for the curve in everyones spine (the curve in your spine is at the first three levels above the sacrum). If you look the seats in the 03, they are different and not nearly as bolstered. In general, you may find a better position by reclining the seatback significantly and rasing the seat height. This works for me but makes it hard to work the clutch.

Honda claims to to be ergonomic experts but they seem to blow something very basic i.e. total misplacement of the parking brake this time.

I found the new Civic fit me very well. Everything fell into place, the seat felt the best of all I've driven to date. I thought it was considerably smoother and quieter than the Mazda3 2.0l. I felt the Mazda3's brakes and steering were more touchy (by design given their "sporty" pretense), while the Civic's felt more "polished". I was quite surprised at how "refined" the Civic felt for a small car.

As for gas mileage, the new Civic will be better than the previous generations because a) the i-VTEC plays all kinds of games to make the engine more efficient across the board and b) the aerodynamics are somewhat cleaner. In fact, the new 1.8l i-VTEC motor is a marvel in smoothness and efficiency, IMO. The extra weight (not much) will be far-offset by these improvements, plus the weight really does not affect highway mileage anyhow.

I have similar complaints about the driver seat in my '01 Civic EX.
I have an '06 LX coupe 5sp. on order. Still, I would have liked to see adjustable lumbar support in the new Civics or at least the EX. How expensive can that be? My Integra has and it's a '99.. Maybe because it has the Acura badge and not Honda? Accords have adj. lumbar support, why not the Civic?

So do lots of cars in this class, including lower-priced Korean models. But this is the Civic discussion so who cares if a Mazda3s has a lumbar adjustment.
