That's why I bought the coupe instead, but some others dislike the coupe styling over the sedan...Go figure

problem with manual? by mrunknown

Hi, I noticed that when I'm coasting, clutch completely depressed and I switch to first gear with the clutch still depressed the car makes a different and slightly louder whirring sound. When I switch out of first gear it changes. The clutch is pressed completely the whole time.

Is this normal or does it indicate a problem?

I finally took a quick test drive tonight in a LX manual (Canadian). The whole dash thing turned out to be a non-issue. The digital speedo thing did not bug me either. I was fairly impressed. Not the sportiest thing but extremely quiet and smooth for a 1.8l small car. I wrung it out in 3rd down an on ramp and hit around 130 kph in 3rd at redline. Very linear power, smooth and quiet. I then "slowed" to 120kph and went up to 4th and it still had lots of oomph in that range, hence I don't see high speed passing as the issue others (including journalists) have made it out to be. Seat was very comfortable and the car fit me well. I've been cross shopping the Civic, Mazda3, and Sonata GL (all manuals) and it looks like I'll go into the Civic. The combination of reasonable driving characteristics, safety features (ABS and airbags), build quality, and cost of ownership (lowest insurance, best mileage) simply make the most sense for me as a general commuter car.

I took my first test drive today also. EX auto. Overall the car was nice. The dash did not bother me at all like I thought it would. Car was solid, handled well and seemed to drive nicely. There were a few issues I noted. Visibility is not as good as my O4 civic. The accelerator and particularly the brakes were very touchy. It takes some getting used to and in general, I prefer more give. The head rests seemed to force your head forward. I am going to try again with the seat more reclined. The steering wheel could stand to be larger. And, it does seem like you are more separated from the road than in previous civics. Overall, I would say it's a very good car but the touchy brakes and head rest are troublesome to me. The Mazda 3 seems to ride more smoothly. At the very least, the brakes have some give. Any one agree.

The first gear is not supposed to be used when the car is still moving, even coasting with clutch depressed; that's what I learnt about 20 years ago. Doing so would wear out or damage the synchro/gears.

What happen to the break in period ? by sr45

Looks as if some are putting the metal to the pedal without the normal required break in period even on a demo...I would never want to buy a demo if that is how people treat the car.

2006 Auto mpg by tawneycat

This 5 speed auto is capable of very impressive gas mileage. First two tanks around 40 and my last tank 231 miles for 5.5 gallons. I have been using 89 since I read temple vtec article about knocking. I drove carefully all level expressway commute (25 miles one way) at about 62 mph to get 42 mpg. A few city trips in there. I fully expect to be able to milk out 45 mpg once broken in and a good synthetic oil in place.
Not bad Honda.
I wonder what a 6 speed manual with real Overdrive could have gotten. I would have paid same as auto for that.

.....for an auto. I too wonder wonder what a 6 speed manual would achieve. No doubt it would be even better. The other advantage to having a manual is they seem to last longer than autos, and if they do require maintenance, they're usually musch less expensive to repair than autos. Of course having an auto in heavy stop and go traffic has it's advantages.....
