Replying to: ocim (Jan 12, 2009 7:53 pm) Back in 2006, the M35 comes with a 5speed automatic, you can feel the lack of torque (keep in mind that the main difference between the V6 and V8 is torque, not hp) and that is why now the M35 has a 7speed and the M45 still has the 5speed - the torque range is so wide, it would just be a waste to put in a 7 speed, unless they are going to raise the final drive ratio for gas saving purposes. So, I don't think you missed anything other than the power. But, again, that is really seperate M45 from M35 (or in Lexus's case, the GS430 from the GS300/350). The engine in the M45 is quieter, sounds better (nothing can touch the deep refined V8 sound, IMO) and does not need to work as hard - which is good for the life of the engine. That is important since I plan to keep this car as long as possible - I have other cars for daily commute that I replace every 3-4 years. If the extra power and the WOW factor does not bother you, the M35X will fit you perfectly fine. BTW, I did test drove the GS300, they are very nice. I must say Lexus really did a good job on current GS line. I would have bought the Lexus if not for the lack of power of the GS300 (or the GS430). Although the GS will cost more, but they hold their values much better. So, if you like the GS with the price to be the only negative factor, I would highly recommend you re-consider your decision. I would be gladly pay $10k more if they put the M45 engine and suspension in the GS350. Hope that helps.

Well, for $42,500, you got a very good deal, especially the AWD. Consider where you live and work, it would be very wise to get the 3M protection, winter mats and splash guards. After all, it is your $45k investment (It should worth more if the economy is not as bad). The weather where you live might be crazy as of right now. So, you might not be as happy with the M45X - AWD or not, you would not be able to open it up most of the time, unless you plan to invest a set of winter tires. but, when spring comes, I am sure you will be happy about the performance of this beast.

Nowadays, the car has special break-in oil and the engine are much better build, so the break in is not as important. Vary the speed between 60-75 would just give you the peace of mind. Most new cars get abused (test driven hard) during demo and test drive when sitting in dealer's lot and that is how most new cars get break in. So, no worries there. Make sure to read the maintenance manual and follow the severe condition maint. schedule (Unless you drive on the highway 90% of the time for your daily usage). As long as you follow that, the M will give you years of enjoyment. Congratulations on your new M

I've been reading most of these posts. It seems a lot of you have done your homework. I've been test driving 2006 M35's for about a month now. I've test driving almost all M35 sports. It's hard to find one here in TX that isn't a sport. I have some questions and I hope you all can help. 1. I'm seeing more M35x on lots than regular 2wd M35. Why is that? The prices are pretty much the same if not cheaper on the M35x. Is there something wrong with them? Why would I not want a M35x if it's the same price? 2. Both the M35 and the M45 use premium gas correct? I heard you can get away with plus, but premium is preferred. Is the maintenance more on the M45? 3. Have any of you purchased your car through a third party dealer like ecar.com, texasdirectauto.com, budgetcarsales.com, etc.? Most of them buy leased vehicles. In my mind, that's good because leasees take care of the car and put low miles on them. Are those type of dealers reliable? Thank you for any input you can offer.

Replying to: whiplash117 (Jan 16, 2009 12:19 pm) The M35 prefer premium gas, but is not required, while the M45 REQUIRES premium - you can do damage to the engine using regular gas (not sure about plus though). As far as the maintenance, M35 and 45 are the same other than the engine, so I would assume the maintenance are basically the same unless you blow the engine. The cost of oil change would be the same. M45 does have 2 more cylinder, so the spark plug and wires will be a bit expensive, but that is minor IMO. If you want the extra performance, I think the M45 will make you happier at a reasonable cost. For leased cars, the leasee will NOT take care the car - they will do minimum maintenance to stay in warranty and drive the car like they stole it - it is covered by warranty for the 3 years they drive them, so who cares if it broke. After the 3 years, they just return it and be done with the car, so why take care of it? Low mileage, sure, but you will pay for the low mileage. |
