M35 vs M45 by junebug07

I guess it depends on why you are buying the car, and how much money you want to pay. I think that the M45 price is too high, but then again so is the M35, unless that price comes with 0.9% financing. I believe that there is also a gas guzzler tax on the 45.

To all of you out there with 35x prices less than 42,000, r u getting any special financing from Infiniti?

With the above advice I will test drive both and lean towards the M45X and negotiate for a better price.I just don't see a lot of auto sales at 40k or above with the current economy. Thanks

There is no gas guzzler tax for the M45. The gas mileage on M45 is rated 16/21 while the M35X is at 16/22 and M35 is 17/23. So, there is not really much difference. But, the performance gain is huge. But again, it depends on how much performance you want and how much money you want to spend / can afford.

I guess the price for any luxury car are too high if you look at what you get. With $42k, you can get yourself 2 Nissan Altima SL. Just as the name indicated, it is for luxury and you need to pay extra to get luxury. If it comes at a price that everyone can afford, it is not luxury any more. The same goes to premium, exotic, etc...

Just FYI, if you build your own M on the Infiniti website, the M45 has no gas guzzler tax, but the M45X having slightly worse gas mileage adds a $1,300 gas guzzler tax.

Just checked on the web site and you are right - there is gas guzzler tax. Wow, I did not realize the gas mileage of M45 (X or not) are that bad... Oh, well, I guess that is the price to pay for the extra hp.

Thanks jbr613. After some additional negotiation I purchased this car for $38,100 plus TTL. The total ODT price was $40,596 which included $2286 for taxes and $210 for other crap. This car does have the Technology Package and the trunk mat but it did not include the xenon and the splash guards that you got with your purchase. So if I add the invoice prices of those two items to my purchase I think the two of us are in the same ball bark. I purchased the car from Douglas Infiniti in NJ.

Shmang,

I agree with you to an extent. If you are looking strictly at performance, than the M45 is the winner. However, I think that both M35 and M45 have plenty of performance for most people. I for one, was looking for an all wheel drive luxury car that had good all around performance (handling, braking, acceleration, ride, etc) but was not specifically concerned with neck breaking acceleration. I also wanted a luxury car that provided ample room for its occupants (front and rear). After comparing such automobiles as the BMW 5 series, Acura RL and Lexus GS, I found the M35X to be a considerably more complete package than any of these three. This car is closer to the size of such cars as the BMW 750i and Lexus LS 460 while being closer in the price range of the first three I mentioned. Add to that impeccable reliability and you got a winner.

So, while I think that both the M35X and M45X are more than competitive with other luxury brands, I did not think that paying additional $$ for the M45 to simply get better acceleration was worth the extra money in my case. Don't get me wrong, I like HP as much as the next guy but when purchasing this kind of an automobile it is not my only consideration. A sports car, definitely. I found both of these cars to have excellent handling, however I found the ride of the M35X to be a little softer, which I preferred.

Finally, by purchasing the M35X, I feel a little less guilty about the fuel economy. Instead of purchasing the worst gas guzzler on the planet, I purchased the second worst gas guzzler on the planet Infiniti really needs to do something about that.

I believe you made the right choice consider your priority, which apparently that performance is not your top priority. That is perfectly fine, just as you said, we are not shopping for a sports car, instead, a performance luxury sedan. So, I understand your choice.

For me, I prefer performance and with family and kids, I am no longer be able to drive a sports car, so I compromised and get the M45 and I am happy with the performance of the M45.

In your case, you might (or might not even bother) test drove the M45 and made your decision. But, if after some serious test drive, someone still can not make his final decision and come to this forum to ask for other's opinion, then, performance is very important. So, based on that, I recommended the M45 and stated the reason. If the reason is not valid with him, he will just simply ignore it and move on with M35 (just like you). But, apparently, he cares about performance and took some serious looking at the M45. But, at the time I responded, I was betting my luck by providing MY opinion and did not know what the result will be.

Shmang, I appreciate your opinion. I was also just trying to give my perspective. You mentioned that you test drove both the M35 and M45 on a number of occasions. I did not engage in extensive test driving of either of these cars. I was mainly comparing the M35 with the cars I mentioned in my previous post. The brief test drives that I had in all of these vehicles was for 45 min or less. I did test drive the M35X on two such brief occasions. The first time i test drove the M35X, I also briefly took the M45 for a spin just because the dealer offered and I was curious as to how fast it was. And, I agree it is very fast. Other than acceleration, I don't recall huge differences in other areas, but since it wasn't my intention to do an extensive comparison perhaps I am wrong.

The second time I drove the M35X, I was mainly comparing it to the Acura and Lexus and it seemed like the M was a better package for me. Have you tested any of these other cars?

Since you did some extensive testing of the M35, did you find any major shortcomings with it, other than acceleration of course. As I mentioned in my earlier post I just agreed to purchase an M35X and will be picking it up this Saturday. I want to make sure I did not overlook something significant before I hand over the check.
