Where is the Rio's inovation by mindaugus

I don't want to retread old news about the MPG numbers except to say they are discouraging. In a car this size you really expect an efficiency equivalent to the Echo. Even my girlfriends 97 Escort is listed at better MPG with a 110HP engine (yes I mean the MT), that has plenty of power. This is the 2006 model and I wish Rio took some more risks than packaging the same small car package that has been sold for 20 years now. On the outside the car looks good even with the Retro black side-moldings. I just feel I've seen this car before, except more boxy. What I'd like to see is soft touch plastics or an interior more like the Spectra since they want a premium price for this segment. Its a good stab but not revolutionary. Does make me curious to see what they do with the hybrid. It would be nice to have a choice of engines, with a diesel and a smaller displacement. I guess they think that wouldn't sell. I don't think this logic holds up, in the end. If you have a good package you could put in a lower displacement and have fun with it. MINI could do it, and Europe's been doing it for years. KIA does sell a diesel and a 1.5L in Europe by the way, giving other counties citizens options.

Where are the new Rios?!?!? by spectraman

I keep popping by my KIA dealer hoping to see a shipment of 2006 Rios, but they only have the one little base level sedan sitting in the back corner of the lot.

I know that they've got a bunch of 2005's to get rid of, which NOT having the 2006's around will help do, BUT.... I really want to take a test drive, esp. in a Rio5.

What are the rest of you folks seeing on the dealer lots out there, as far as 2006 Rio inventory goes? Has anyone even seen a Rio5 anywhere yet?

My dealer had 5 last weekend. No Rio5s however; I wonder if any have been shipped yet. All of the RIOs were LXs, and just one had a manual transmission. None had any options such as the power package or ABS brakes.

Thats the same out here in southern California. I have seen many 06 Rios but no Rio5 yet. A dealer is suppose to call me so I can take a test drive when a Rio5 shows up. I live practically next door to Kia North American headquarters. Maybe I will drive by this weekend to see if they have any Rio5s on their lot. I saw the 06 Rio on their lot about 2 months before the dealers had them.

Happy motoring

I saw a 2006 Kia Rio by iluvmysephia1

on the lot in Pocatello, ID, this week. It was jet black and looked very good to me. A lot better body design than Rio's of old IMO. It was an automatic, though, and was selling for around $13,500. The solid side moulding built in from the factory looked good on it. This would be a good small car to have black as a color for. I like it's front end design, the grille and hood design meshes together in a crisp, smart new way. I also liked the rear end design. My concern with getting one of these would be it's small size, would there be ample room for our two small "kids", our two Pomeranians? My wife and I love the nice cabin room in our Sportage and I would guess we'll look at a new world order Kia Sportage when trade-in time rolls around again. The dogs have ample room in our present Sportsman. Not gonna be tradin' in for a good while yet...she's purrin' like a kitten, gentlemen!

I really like the way Kia is heading with all of their new models...they get better and better each model year IMHO. The Long Haul Warranty remains yet prices don't seem to climb. Ya gotta love that aspect of the Kia shopping experience. This new Rio will sell in large numbers in Europe-in fact, Kia says it already is selling like hotcakes there.

That may be why Kia designed the Rio with a European flavor. This is most apparent with the black moldings and also in the styling of the Rio5--very similar to some small hatches I've seen in Europe.

exactly. I think we tend to think in terms of the U.S. market when we examine new cars. Of course, we're in America so it stands to reason we think of ourselves when we see a new rig. The thing is is Europe's roadways are thinner without the room we have here in the States. The new '06 Kia Rio 4-door sedan I saw last week in Idaho looked way better in person than seeing it on the net. The black looked great to me for some reason...I'm gonna look at more of them in person in the coming months. The price is sure right. If they can accelerate up to freeway speeds nicely I would be even more enthused with them. Wait a minute...I'm driving a '01 Kia Sportage right now! Not exactly a speed wagon either! Yeah, it'll be cool to see the Rio5 coming up here soon, too.

I just happened to see a black '06 Rio automatic today. It was after closing time at the dealer, but I was in the neighborhood so I went in to see if the Rios had arrived yet. I saw only one on the lot or in the showroom, the black sedan, and it had a SOLD sign on it. It did look good in black, and the tan interior was a nice complement. I thought the interior was well done for an inexpensive car. I happened to look at some '05 Accents a few minutes later and the Rio's interior looked much richer and more modern--and the Rio was only about $500 more, even with its side curtains. The fit and finish outside were excellent, also--shiny paint with no discernable orange peel, and narrow and even panel gaps. The wheel covers looked like alloys if you stood a few feet away, and even have the little covers over the lug nuts like some alloys do. Can't wait to go back next week and drive one--if they still have one. That dealer said they were only getting one for now, and maybe that was it!

look small to you? Would it seem too small compared to driving a Kia Spectra or Hyundai Elantra around, if someone was used to those size of cars?

I was impressed with the '06 Rio's stature and exterior look in that black color. All I could think when looking at it at night was how it would be to drive it and would it be too small. Guess that's what test drives are for.
