ABS Brakes by rooney6

I'm figuring that the ABS brakes are on when I hear grinding noise upon applying the brakes. When this ocurrs I immediately release the brakes thinking that something is going to fall out the bottom and I start pumping the brakes to keep from hitting the car in front of me. Would it be okay to press the pedel to the floor until I come to a complete stop? I also feel the shaking, pulling underneath my foot. Is this normal?

With ABS, just keep your foot on the brakes. They do the pumping for you. Some noise and vibration in the pedal are normal with ABS.

Thank you for the quick response. I'll try that.

Lets clarify something here, you should not have any noise coming from your ABS system unless you are braking very hard. The ABS does not activate unless it senses an imminent loss of braking friction. You should also not be able to put "the pedal to the floor" with normally functioning brakes. The grinding noise may very well be the warning that your brake pads are worn out.

Get to a brake shop ASAP, especially if you can put "the pedal (all the way) to the floor".

Many ABS systems make a sound when activated that could be interpreted as "grinding". Some are louder than others. It can be quite a surprise to someone who has never experienced it before--which I assume rooney6 hasn't, until recently.

I may very well be on the wrong track here, but I'm concerned that the OP didn't say something like "occasionally or once in a while" when describing the problem. "Upon applying the brakes" means something else like "frequently or usually" to me.

Its wintertime and you're in Minnesota, how often do you trigger the ABS?

This winter, more often than most recent winters. Lots of snow/ice.

I've seen many similar posts over the years, from owners with their first car with ABS. Caution with suspected brake problems is always advisable, but I also don't like to unduly alarm people for something that could be normal operation.

A recent, personal example: I was driving a week ago (not in my Hyundai) right after a big snowstorm. Turned right from a (mostly) plowed road onto an unplowed road and then started a U-turn. The Brake and ABS lights started flashing. Oh, no! I thought. I was less than a block from my destination so I parked, did my errand, then later called the dealer (car is under warranty). I explained my problem and noted I really wanted it taken care of right away (this was a Saturday, but hey, it's the brakes!), and the service writer said they were full up until Monday. After I expressed dismay at that, she asked me to hold for a minute. When she returned, she said that they have had several calls just like mine that morning, and the "problem" was probably just snow packed into the wheels, causing the ABS sensor to go haywire. She said it should clear up as soon as the snow gets out of the wheels. Sure enough, after less than half a block the lights went out.
