Nope, US Gallons. by vcheng

5 speed tC, still running it in, (less than 1000 miles), regular gasoline, about 28 mpg city, 36 highway.

I would say that your mileage is about the same since my driving has very little time just sitting in traffic. That will reduce mileage quickly.

tC Gas Milage... Are you sure?... by johnnyringo
Jul 26, 2005 (5:03 am)
I have had my manual trans. 05 tC sense 3/15/05 and I can't seem to get better than 27.6 mpg no matter how I drive... I calculate gas milage by taking an odometer reading after toping off then driving till I need a fill up then taking another odometer reading and divide the difference by how may gallons I filled up with... this has to be correct. I took a 2400 mile round trip from the twin cities to austin texas and back and due to the high rpms I'm guessing... I only averaged 25.8 mpg for the whole trip... I took gas milage readings every fill up and my best was 26.2... my lowest was 25.1 granted I averaged 75-85 mph the whole way. The only gripe about this car that I have is it could really binefit from a 6th overdrive gear... or a total change of gear ratio... I like the sporty pick up it has but would trade some of that for better gas economy... anyone heard of new gear sets for the tC?... I know there easy to find for full size trucks but never looked for asian cars.

P.S. I have 12k miles and have not expierenced any of the body noise or roof noises that allot seem to complain about... I believe that sense its a first year car there may be quality control issues... glad i got a good one!...

A couple of points... by iluvmysephia1

it's good to hear from a tC owner who doesn't have the crackly-poppy issues inside the cabin.

Also, gas mileage in your tC seems normal to me...27.5...gonna be hard to top that on an average of city/highway driving because of what you're thinking about how it's gearing mechanicals come to you from the factory, and the car's sorta-heavy-ish weight in proportion to it's dimensions.

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a limited edition tC in May of this year, and practically put every option on this vehicle. Since the day I was given the car I have had a lot of rattles and pops and shakes and whatever noise you can think of.

My car has spent almost as much time at the dealership as it has in my own possession, and like your cases, I always got my car back worse than when I brought it in.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I contacted Toyota Corporate and opened a case. They informed me that their engineers in Japan have pin pointed a variety of issues with the interior of the car and they are determining which cars out of which manufacurting plants have certain issues. They will then release a major list to dealerships for a mass fix for our tCs depending on where they were produced.

Another side note....the major rattle in my car was coming from the back hatch area, and sounded like it was coming from my roof. They did everything they could while destroying the headliner and nothing worked. Scion has found the problem and issued a TSB for the rear hatch stay. These are the hydraulic pumps that keep your hatch open and allow it to close slowly. Well I guess these "stays" are too long, so when the hatch is shut tight, the inner arm extends too far and begins to hit the tube that contains it. This creates a rattle noise on small bumpy roads and a louder clicking noise when you hit big bumps. The quick fix is to put larger rubber stoppers on the bottom of your hatch so it doesn't shut as tight, or simply close your hatch very softly just until you hear the first click.

I do the soft close and I instantly have no more noises coming from the back end, until I hit a huge bump, but that's rare. It's a lot better than before. I can now enjoy riding in my car as before I was ready to simply steer into on coming traffic.

I hope this helps some of you with your noises, and don't worry Scion will provide the fixes in the near future.

Thanks for the insight kmcc32. Very interesting.

Maybe the hatch noise can be fixed, and hopefully my new left dash noise can be fixed. But, I wonder how Toyota is going to fix the roof noise problems, even if the lemon cars are identified.

My car's in the shop now for the third time on this roof issue. After 4 days and $1000+ total rebuild, they advised me that they still haven't fixed the problem. To the dealer's credit, they're still trying, but I'm wondering if a complete fix is even possible.

Seat spotting by tahlequah
Aug 02, 2005 (5:13 pm)
I've been looking through the archives and I'm coming up empty handed on this issue so, let me post my issue here:

About 2 months after I bought my tC (july 04) I began to notice small "spots" on the outer lip of the driver's seat. They looked like something had been spilled on the seat. The only thing that had come in contact with the seat was rainwater. So, of course I thought, "Gosh, acid rain is really getting serious these days."

As time went by the stains became more pronounced. When I took it in for an oil change in january I mentioned the stains to my sales rep (he's in the same building as service). He told me to mention it to my service guy at the next oil change.

Next oil change I mention it and the service guy says, yeah we should mention that to your sales rep and see what he can do.

I call my sales rep (HIS voice mail) who tells me (MY voice mail) that I should bring it in for the service guy to look at. Are you with me so far? Beginning to sound like the "Mom said to ask Dad" run-around, doesn't it?

Finally, when I take it in for it's 1 year maintenance I got the service guy to really look at it, only to tell me I needed to see the service "manager".

So, today I went to see the service "manager". The guy never came around while I was in the bay. So, like a dummy, I toodle off to keep from being bored. In the meantime, this service "manager" takes the car to the back for the techs and himself to look at. They brought it back to me saying it looked like "suntan lotion", it's not covered under warrantee, and they suggested I buy some Toyota fabric cleaners.

Now, before my service guy even knew his "manager" was going to be less-than-nice about this, he told me an xB had just had it's seat replaced because of the same thing. So, when he came back with this verdict on my seat (which has never had anything more than rainwater on it - certainly not suntan lotion!) I went immediately to my sales rep. He confirmed the xB seat and also confirmed another tC that not only had stains but also with the seat upholstery coming apart. He basically rolled his eyes and said the "service manager" wasn't going to listen to him, either (apparently a common problem). So, now I have to mount a campaign to corporate about this.

Has anyone else had this problem or know of others who have? If you have, do you know what came of it?

I too have the same problem with my seats... I am pretty sure what it is because I work at a very reputable adhesive and plastics development company in Minnesota M M... hint hint... any way I also owned and operated my own carpet cleaning "Chem Dry" franchise for a few years. If I had to go to court and testify I would swear it is some kind of volitial component of the seat cushion material or the adhesive used to keep the fabric stuck to the cushion material that has wicked into the seat fabric and it holds dirt, skin flecks, dust,etc... like glue. The only other explanation that I would find valid is that if some kind of silicon based fabric protector was use you might also see the same effect. BUT... due to the splotchy appearance I would go with my first explanation if I were going to start a formal investigation. This is a real problem for Toyota if this becomes a case... Acrylates and polystyrenes that are used in adhesives and foam padding are strong sensitizers. Meaning alomost anyone will become alergic to them given enough exposure. Symtoms are irritated skin at the low end and up to sever swelling in extreem cases... If you find anything out or if your dealer fixes the problem let me know.

I thought I was the only one with this problem! Actually, I didn't know if it was really a problem, or just my compulsive obsession with my new car. Never even thought to bring this to the dealer's attention, unlike the rattles I have had fixed (or rather, tried to have fixed). I too would love to know if there is anything they can do to fix the problem!
And to the first person to post this problem, I have not had suntan lotion anywhere near my seats! On my face, yes. But in contact with the edge of a seat near my arm, no!

How did you get the carbon fiber look on your dashboard? I don't remember seeing that on the scion website.
