The official description of ULSD is No more than 15 PPM sulfur allowed. Number 2 diesel sold in much of the USA was as much as 500 PPM sulfer. LSD Low Sulfur Diesel is no more than 30 PPM sulfur. CA mandated a diesl that was no more than 130 PPM sulfur a few years ago.
Here is the rub. Many big diesel engines depended on the sulfur as sort of a lubricant. My understanding is that all ULSD sold will have an additive lubricant to take care of those engines. VW & MB cars of recent vintage were developed in Germany on ULSD. So they like the stuff. BP/ARCO is one of the leaders in ULSD. They claim a cetane rating of 53 on theirs. That is very good. Lots of energy in a gallon. I ran it exclusively for a year and never a puff of smoke or any tell tale diesel odor.

Well now we in the states* can use ULSD because it its on the way to our local gas stations*!!
*I not sure if it'll be in those low emmision states. NY is off that list. O and for those who want to by a diesel in those states, A Freshened Vw Touareg will be offered with the V10 TDI (again, but) in all 50 states for 3 months!! However, it will drop to 45 states afterwards .

I took delivery of my E320CDI last year in March at the Factory in Germany. I asked the person who delivered the car to me about BIO diesel. Her answer was not to use it. On my question: Why not? she answered that BIO diesel would attack the plastic in the tank and fuel system. Sounds like the fuel tank is made from plastic. To verify my answer I sent an e-mail to MBUSA and their answer was not to use BIO diesel. Other than problems with the climate control, which the dealer fixed by replacing the control unit, I am very happy with this car. It is my 4th new MB and my third MB diesel (240D, 300D turbo, E430 and now the E320CDI) and by far the best of all. I enjoy the forum.

Hi, I too am interested in a 320 cdi and would like to know if the gas mileage lives up to its ratings. Also, is bio diesel different that Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel? Are some states turning to the Bio diesel? Thanks for any help guys.

First, please look at my note 411 of 413. As far as gas mileage is concerned, I think no cars get what it says on the window sticker, however I am showing around 30 MPG just going to town and back, about 25 miles round trip with some traffic lights. On trips I see about 33 to 36 MPG with a much as 40 in the mountains, which is most likely due to the leaner mixture in high altitude (Colorado). I also noticed that the gas mileage changes 1 to 2 MPG between going on a very smooth road (asphalt)or a corse road (like tar and gravel). Considering the size and the weight of this automobile, IMHO there is no better performing car car and I mean performance and gas mileage than the E320CDI. I do not work for MB and own no stock in the company. I also own a GMC Denali (top notch automobile), but I am waiting for MB to announce the MClass with the 3.2l in line 6 or the 3l V6 Bluetec Diesel. My next car will be that one or the Touareg V10 Diesel. I love Diesels.

Any news about Bluetec Diesel R class

I currently own a 05 E320 cdi and currently get between 33 to 37 mpg on the highway. I have over 50,000 on mine and love the car except for the fact I'd like a larger and longer wheel base for a smother ride. The R class just might fit the bill, although MB seem to be giving the gas model away right now. What's up with that? Is the R class going to be discontinued? I am concerned about the mileage and the fact that it's a v6. I have heard the the in-line 6 is a far superior engine for longevity.
I am also looking forward to using ULSD and was wondering when it will come to a station near me in Minnesota

No the R isn't going to be discontinued, but you should be able to get a good deal on the R320 CDI also. It doesn't use the bluetec technology like the 07' E320. Yes the old I6 is a durable motor (made of iron), but no one knows how the V6 will hold up and I seriously doubt MB would sacrafice any durability with their diesels. This new V6 has to do the same duty as the old I6 so I'd say that it is up to the task and it will be much cleaner running to boot.

It is not true that no car equals the sticker mileage.
All the VW diesel cars not only equal the sticker mileage but get better......
I also think the E320 will meet and probably beat the sticker mileage figure too. You might have to wait until it gets broke in a little......

I hope we don't face a shortage of type 2 diesel. I recall reading an article about a month ago highlighting some concerns. I believe the '07 model will have what is called bluetec technology for leaner emissions but yet use the same type of diesel fuel. here in miami, i have not heard of supply limitations. the price of diesel is all over, in some cases higher than premium in other cases slightly lower.
Aside from the great mileage, any performance issues? Troubles encountered?
Thanks for your feedback.
