Update I made the signs for the car, my UNHAPPY CHEVY OWNER picket sign. I parked in front of 4 of the biggest Chevy dealer around. In 5 mins they came running out to talk to me, after 15 mins more talking total around 20 mins at each dealer They said they will make calls, then on to the next. I told them I was not mad at them they just sell them. I was mad at Chevy in Detriot and told them on there BS customer sevice line, I would do this, so here I'm ! they are building the junk ! cover ups till they are forced to fix cars with recalls or what ever ! One of the big chevy dealers said he already fixed one with my same oil eating problems. He said call him back monday morning he will make some calls, I did and at 11:00 monday morning he had the car, the wife had a 2012 loaner, Tuesday morning he called said car was ready. They did the heads a intake gasket was leaking but not on to the ground, the found it using mirrors. When we picked car up he said my picketing sure woke things up. We were treated like New car buyers again !!!! But isnt that the way it should be !!!! No Games 100,000 or 5 years of the 3 new car we bought in 2009 one was good # 2 was junk traded it in for the a lost for the $26,000 Impala and the oil problem out of all 3 new Chevy cars they never said that Chevy says if the car use's 1 quart of oil every 2,000 miles that is exceptable oil use !!!!!

gm knows it has problems of oil consumption in the 3,6 engine
my 06 cts has the same problem good ole gm/fitgerald caddie wants me to spend 90,00 for a new oil change and 118,00 p/service hour to determine ,why, after a recent oil change my dip stick showed zero oil
there are 52 pages of oil consumption problems listed on edmunds.
gm got 130 billion bailout, made 40 billion profits and won't fix these problems
when the kenyan, hawaian fired miller;he fired the guy who would fix these kinds of problems. your gm zone rep knows the problems but seldom admits they exist

My 2007 with 3.9 Engine would use about 1/2 qt in 4,000 miles with mixed city/hwy driving. I drove it to Nashville one day (about 350 miles round trip) and used 1 quart just on that trip. The car was still in powertrain warranty so I took it to the dealership and they told me about a small orfice inside one of the valve covers where the PCV hose connects. They said the hole can get stopped up and oil will route through the throttle body and burn through the engine. The car never smoked. They just removed the pcv hose and blew out the orfice. Problem solved.
Since then the car was totalled but I like Impalas so I have a new 2012 coming in next week. Guess I'll see how the oil consumption is on the new 3.6.

I purchased the 2006 Impala new in Nov 2005. I've had this problem the past few winters, but just now thinking about it since it was chilly this morning. The heat works great until I stop, then it just goes out. Air is still blowing, but no heat. Soon as I go, the heat starts working again.
If I stop at a redlight I freeze until the light turns green.
I think the warranty has expired since I'm over 36k miles. Any advice I can do myself will be much appreciated.

One thing you may want to check is the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. Check it when the engine is cold, and make sure the coolant (Dex-cool) is at the cold level line on the reservoir.
Low coolant can cause car heaters to be inefficient. I know the coolant level in my '06 tends to drop over time. I have had to bring the level back up several times in the past 2 years...I always keep a bottle of the pre-mixed Prestone Dex-cool handy

Had same problem with my 2007 Impala. Service made repair. Said it was due to low pressure/air in coolant system hoses. In basic terms he said they had to remove air from hose system and fill with coolant. He expressed that I could not correct by simply filling the reservoir. Problem has not returned.

I have an 05 and experience the same lack of heat when stopped problem. I can fix it temporarily by adding coolant, but apparently it just leaks out again (or something!) because the problem comes back eventually. Sometimes immediately...sometimes weeks later.
I've also noticed an excessive gurgling sound in the engine compartment, but it seems close to the firewall. It seems to happen more within the first 5 minutes of running, but I've heard it even after it's been running for an hour. I also notice the tell-tell odor of coolant when I'm standing next to the passenger door retrieving my briefcase after I've parked in the morning at work. I've never noticed (although that doesn't mean it's not there) any coolant leaks/puddles on the ground.
I've seen others mention the temp gauge. Mine usually hovers about halfway between cold (140 degrees?) and straight up (170 degrees?). When I have the lack of heat problem, the gauge is usually much closer to straight up and fluctuates a great deal.
Anyone have any ideas? I've had a friend tell me that it sounded like a heater core about to need replacing. Yikes!!

Sounds like the water pump is bad. The water pump on my '06 failed at 33,000 miles and I had symptoms similar to yours.
If you are still under warranty, or have a trusted mechanic, they should easily be able to pressure test the coolant system for leaks. After the pressure test on my car, the dealer said my water pump was "really gushing". They replaced it and all is well again.

Have a 2006 Impala 59800 on it and last winter lost my heat at idle. Took it to dealer and had the system bled and all was well. Here i am again this winter and have the same symtems. Back to the dealer again ,they do a pressure test and say i need new head gaskets as they are the cause of the problem. Gaskets are replaced under extended warranty and all is well until i get home and let it idle, and you guessed it no heat at idle. Back to dealer again this time they tell me it needs to be BURPED. Once again this is done and all is well until now 2 1/2 weeks later no heat at idle. Any ideas anyone as the 60 k warranty is over.
