WELL, I don't think you'll like the answer ...

I have a tough time breaking 21 mpg. Its the one true downside to the car. I love it, though, so I simply deal with it. Its fast, AWD, and a heavy luxo car. Not an economical equation.

I'm sure you remember I was in the same situation as you. Driving an Accord. I grew to really hate it. I had the V6 6-speed, so was getting 28 mpg. But at what price? I'll take the 21 mpg and love my car.

is also (I think) dropping hints. She did make a passing comment not too far back about maybe she should get a new car (to replace the '05 Odyssey). Then she got practical (still works well, etc.). Then over the holiday she mentioned (in a family discussion about other peoples shopping) that she didn't want anothe minivan.

I doubt she will come out and try to pull rank, but it wouldn't bother me at all to replace the van. I still don't quite trust it...

So maybe I should snag a good deal on an XC90 for her, and just keep mine (or go cheap on a replacement!)

so hold out for a V70. It'll come.

I had the same issue before I bought my S70 T5. After finally deciding that was the car I wanted, I waited quite a while to find the right one. It was worth it.

trouble for me is, I don't know if my 500+ miles per week is going to be long term, or just through Q1 next year. If it becomes permanent, that's a lot of miles at measly mileage. Might as well just get an X3 and get the cargo space! and something more useful as the damily truckster.

I know that anything I buy won't get the same mileage I get now, but I kind of have ~25 as the floor. Maybe I can find a deal on a 3 series wagon instead....

I thought when I stopped requiring a stick it would get easier. Never figured I would get hooked on the 1 car (V70) that is rare as hens teeth!

I suppose it will. One other factor is working with JRL, and the 11th may be the perfect time to grab something (supply vs. demand baby!) Assuming, of course, that the something is running that day... and the only V70 IIRC is a non-turbo, and I ain't doing that. Or an R, now that could get me to bend on the MPG requirement!

messing around, idly car shopping, looked at a '99 RAV4 yesterday, my favorite generation of that little car (back when it was still actually little), green, 117K, stick shift (of course!), AWD (back then it was a 50/50 split system like the manual-shift Subes have), brand new Yokohamas. They are asking $8K, it is fully loaded except for moonroof, in really nice shape, drove just like it was new, t-belt has been done.

I figure they would take $6, maybe $6.5, so why didn't I pull the trigger? I don't know, maybe I am over my CCBS. Even relatively good deals just don't get me revved up to make a deal any more...

options by stickguy

Did some more thinking (to make Woody happy!) At this point, cars I like that should fit my odd set of requirements (and likely price point):

Favorites:

BMW 3 series wagon (05-06)
Volvo V70 2.5T (05-06)
Audi A3 2.0T DSG (06?) (need to drive this one again. Been a while) But an Audi?

Dark horses (violate the MPG floor, and the no-SUV rule, but these I like):

BMW X3 2.5i (06)
Mazda CX-7 (07) - need to drive at some point. So far have only sat in it.

Of course, of the 5, only the X3 is likely available in any real supply at the auction.

Did they even have a 2.5 engine available in '06?

That would be very hard to find... With an automatic, you'll likely do just as well with the 3.0 on the highway..

they still had the 2.5i model I think in 2006. certainly in '05.

they are both 3.0l though (even though they kept the 2.5 nomenclature). Just not as fancy valvetrain, and a bit less HP, offset by a bit less $$!)

Actually, that isn't correct..

For '04-'06, those are the old E46 engines...

2.5 is 2.5 litre and has 184 hp
3.0 is 3.0 litre and has 225 hp

They didn't go to the new engines until '07-'08, even though the new 3-series started using them in '06.

regards,
kyfdx
