Hi, Lori-Ann--

The more I drive my Prius, the better I like it.

I just signed up here to get more tricks on better mileage. I average 50mpg, but would like to do better.

I'd also like some nice aftermarket accessoriesfor my Prius. I think I'll check out an AUTOBACS store when I am in Japan this next week. Since all Priuses are made in Japan, I would think the accessories ought to be pretty much the same, but I'll ask, since I won't be able to go back and return them .

Be careful when buying aftermarket rims ("wheels"). They can be very tricky to balance. And, make sure you buy them from someplace that can service them in case you have to move to another state (e.g. Discount Tire). Although, I got awfully tired of telling the guys at Discount Tire that they needed to do an 'alloy-one balance' when I took my former car in for a tire rotation and balance. You'd think they would know how to do their job . Also be sure to get a lug wrench while you're there...save yourself a few bucks in towing costs if you get a flat!

I will see if I can get any insight into the 2006 model while I am in Nagoya (not too far from Toyota City). I have a friend there who works at Toyota. It's only been 2 years on this body style, though. Have you heard anything interesting?

Attach point for tow tool:
This is access to a threaded hole in frame. In the truck is special towing tool. Tool is large threaded eye hook. If vehicle is stuck in mud or sand, you might want a friend to pull you out. Procure special tow tool stowed in trunk with jack and spare tire.
Remove plastic cap covering access hole in front bumper. Screw in special towing tool and you now have secure point to attach tow rope.

Question to Prius owners by bobour

Hi. I am looking into buying a Prius, and I figure the owners' forum is the best place to ask my questions.
1. I drive only on weekends, and sometimes go for several weeks w/o driving. What does this do to the battery?
2. What does cold do to the battery? We do get cold winters in North-East once in a while.

Thanks a lot!

What does this do to the battery?

The small 12 volt battery drains down and you are dead. Will the car be parked out in the cold? If so that will make it worse. If you are used to having a car you can just leave for weeks at a time and jump in and go. I would think twice about the Prius. There are precautions that can solve these problems. But why when most cars do not suffer these shortcomings.

The classic model of Prius used a very small 12-volt battery, since it isn't used to start the engine anyway (the battery-pack does that). The security system drained the 12-volt down too fast. Toyota has since issued a TSB for a larger 12-volt when the current one wears out.

The HSD model of Prius (2004+) provides a disable button for the SE/SS feature, preventing some drain. The auto-on headlights can be disabled too. You do still have the security system using that 12-volt while parked though, but that's true of any vehicle.

As for it being dead, that is just plain not true. If the 12-volt does get drained, you can jump the Prius just like you would with any other car.

Sounds like an improvement. I just don't like jump starting a car. It should be good for 2-3 months without messing with it. Just jump in and go. Plus if they leave it out in the cold during the winter that is going to drain it faster. If the 12 volt is a lead acid and it gets drained at a low temperature it is ruined. Lead acid batteries like to stay charged. This was one of the downsides when I thought about buying a Prius. I leave my vehicle sit for 3-9 weeks without starting it. I have never had a problem starting one after that long gone.
