Hello All --
In response to audioshybrid's question about running out of gas: don't do it. My tank got down to 1 gallon remaining this past weekend and several indicator lights went on, including the Master Warning and Check Engine. As indicated in the owner's manual, I had to take the car to the nearest dealership.

Now, two days and rental car later, I find out it's going to cost me $250 to get "air" out of the fuel system that gathered when my tank was "empty". I use the quotation marks because I don't entirely agree that this was my fault -- according to Toyota it's not covered by the warranty and I have to pay out of pocket.

I just signed up on this board to find out if anyone else has ever had this problem? It seems very strange to me. Is this to be expected?

Moral of the story: fill the tank when you have a couple bars left.

Btw, I have a 2006 Prius with 2500 miles. Other than this issue, I love the car. I just hope I get good service under the warranty.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

"Leaving a typical lead acid battery in an 80% discharge condition for very long produces irreversible sulfation. Does the battery technology employed in the PRIUS preclude some similar degradation?"

The Prius uses NiMH batteries and do not have this problem.

i have a 06 prius pkg#8. can any prius owners tell me if it does any harm to use the B feature on the shift lever for slowing down on hills.also when coming to a stop sign. or just use it to help the brakes out.it wont hurt anything i'm assuming cause otherwise why would they have it? just like some input from a few folks on this. thank you . pete

No, it doesn't do any harm, but more important, it doesn't do any good either. Above speeds of 20 mph, stepping on the brake pedal doesn't actually apply the brakes unless you step on it fairly hard. Instead, light brake pedal triggers the eletric motor/generator into recharging the battery which acts as a brake, so in most cases you are not using the brakes at all. The only application I can see for using the B mode is if you were going down a very long relatively steep grade that fully charged your battery in which case the generator would not be providing much braking action and you might want to implement the B mode for speed control.

B for the downgrade. by jw05pilot

"B" is the position for engine braking. Engine braking assists the brakes in slowing the vehicle. It serves a similar function to downshifting on an automatic transmission. This position is intended for going down long declines, and utilizes the electric motor to slow the vehicle and regenerate electricity. For more information please reference Section 2 of your Owner's Manual.

Seeko

I barely scratched the surface with respect to the "B" mode. If you want a really comprehensive posting on the
whys and wherefores of the B mode, go to:

If you have problems accessing this, let me know.

Prius vs. Camry SE by utgopher

I am ready to pull the trigger on a new vehicle purchase and have put "hold" money down for a Prius. However, as I am completing my due diligence process I am struggling with the decision to purchase the Prius - 2006 Package 6 (with dealer installed leather) or a standard Camry SE (similarly equipped).

I will be using the vehicle for work (Realtor) and although the Prius has the fuel cost advantage (based on my mileage this equates to about $75/month) but the SE costs about $2,700 less (factoring in the full tax credit for the Prius) creating a payback timeframe for the Prius of roughly three years. So for the time period I expect to have the vehicle, it is a breakeven financial situation.

Hence, it comes down to comfort and, unfortunately, customer perception. The Camry just has a more elegant feel and in many respects a better ride than the Prius. The Prius has a bit more cargo space but it lacks power seats and, more importantly for a short person like myself, no driver side height adjustment. So, although my heart says go with the Prius, the brain says go with the Camry. My "green" side also likes the Prius' low emissions but, in reality, the Camry is no slouch in that regard either.

My hope was the Camry-hybrid would have been the solution. However, the cargo space on the Camry-hybrid is the worst of the three. In addition, its current price point (and lower gas mileage) just doesn't make financial sense.

Based on all of the Toyota owners out there (especially the Camry owners) can you provide your sense of the quality differences between the Prius and Camry SE? And, if you were going to be a passenger in either vehicle which would you prefer?

Thanks for the feedback

Last years Camry. Better head room in the rear. Bigger trunk than the 2007. You may find a great deal on a last years model. Better looking too, IMO.
