The current Prius II came out about Oct 2003 as a 2004 model. There should be a quite a few of them near 100k miles by now.

Running out of Gas? by audioshybrid

Hi everyone, I just bought a 2006 and I am incredibly happy with is so far... My wife asked me if we ran out of gas, if we would still be able to drive to the gas station using only the electric engine? Does anyone know?

Also, I heard a rumor that all prius' have the same computer components in them (ie: navigational systems, etc...), but the #1's through #6's just have them shut off. Is this true?

Would you still be able to use the electric motor after you run out of gas. On the USA version, I hazard the guess that the answer is no. I think that if the gas engine was running when you ran out, the vehbicle would quit. If the electric motor was running when you ran out, it would continue to run until the computer demanded engine support and then the vehicle would quit. Interestingly, the European version of the Prius has an EV switch that permits you to force the electric motor to run for a longer period. This is a really nice feature when you want to move the vehicle for a short distance. There are some aftermarket kits that will restore this feature to a USA
vehicle.

I also guess that within 3 years, this will become an academic matter because the rumor is that Toyota intends to dramatically increase motor battery capacity that would permit extended periods of operation on the electric motor only. This evolution will require that the vehicle be plugged into a charging source now and then.

It will run until the battery gets to 20%, probably a maximum of 1 or 2 miles. When the battery depletes, the car stops cold.

Thank you guys so much for your information on the gas situation. I'm hoping it never comes to that, but I just wanted to know in case... Seems like everyday I learn something new about my new car, and it makes me love it even more...

Does anyone know anything about that aftermarket installation switch for making the car run solely on electric? I am curious about all the possibilities with this car.

Again, thanks everyone.

Leaving a typical lead acid battery in an 80% discharge condition for very long produces irreversible sulfation. Does the battery technology employed in the PRIUS preclude some similar degradation?
