The only thing is when are the Bluetec versions of the ML,R and GL going on sale in all 50 states. Mercedes is missing out on a lot of sales by not being able to sell diesels in New York, Maine and especially Cali. A GL320 Bluetec would get really good mileage for a vehicle of its size.

Sales info for April 2006, up 13 percent compared to April 2005. The S,GL,R,CLK,SLK and to a lesser degree the E-Class all contributed to the gain.

1600 or so R's is probably not making anyone's day at MB. Given the increasing number that I am seeing, as well as the incentives, I thought it would be more.

MBUSA does seem to be shooting the lights out otherwise, though.

True I'm sure they'd like to do about 2K a month, but that isn't going to happen often enough. I expect the GL to do much better.

May 2006 Sales by merc1

Sales were up 21+ percent for May 2006 vs. May 2005. The S,E,R,SL,SLK and new GL were all responsible for this huge gain.

Dealers must be giving away 06' E-Classes ahead of the new 07' model arriving at the end of June. The R-Class moved only 1400 or so units, still not up to what MB needs in order to meet their goal of 20K a year. The GL was the surprise, it outsold the ML.

Sales

Also Mercedes has confirmed their 2007 model lineup. The new CL550 and CL600 arrive at year-end. In the "I don't understand category", the R500, ML500 and G500 keep the old 5L V8 instead of getting the new 5.5L V8. The CLK550 has also been confirmed.

Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG Special Series by merc1

As the only eight-cylinder roadster in its segment the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG provides unique driving experience. The two-seater is now even more sporty: Mercedes AMG has developed an exclusive and distinctly puristic special series which sets new standards in driving dynamics. With the AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine enhanced to 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Newton metres, numerous lightweight construction components, carbon hardtop, 19-inch AMG forged wheels, AMG height-adjustable torsion sports suspension and AMG high-performance composite brake system the special SLK 55 AMG demonstrates even more convincingly its sports talent – and makes a good figure on any closed course.

The only bad news is that this appears to be a Germany-only model.

Perhaps... by mikeebear

Perhaps MB created the CLS to put another vehicle in the 65-75k area since the new S class is now up well over 80k, and there were no other vehicles in that price range besides the S-500.

It says in some places that the backseat window view is poor over-all, and if that's the case, I don't see why MB just didn't make another sedan rather than trying to create some spaceship-like coupe. That might make more of business sense, although having the E and S already should be enough.

Some of you might suggest to just buy a bigger engine option if you want a vehicle in the 65-75k area, but that doesn't accommodate the consumers who want to pay more for luxury and better over-all vehicle rather than just a more powerful engine.

As for the direction of MB? It's clear. You mentioned BMWs and Lexus. BMWs are sports-luxury cars and Lexus has the identity of quiet, family cars. Mercedes is trying to give us both. Not just a sports car, not just a family car, but everything you could want in a car. That's kind of how I view mercedes-benz at this point, and I admit I do like it. They still engineer and design to high standards, they still drive wonderfully and perform wonderfully, and they still live up to their luxurious name.

I have a BMW and I was not very impressed on how much it compromised on luxury. Power seats didn't even come standard, (something I didn't know until after I got the car lol )

Anyways I still love mercedes-benz and hope to be buying an slk soon!
